Coaches, let me give you some advice.
If you’re going to a 3–4 scheme and your base coverage is Quarters (Cover 4), you better have a hell of a defensive backs coach who can teach detailed fundamentals.
Quarters eventually turns into zero man—you’re not playing with a true free safety.
That’s why I preach: “Fundamentals Before Scheme.”
We play in one of the toughest districts in Texas—formerly 23-6A, now 17-6A after realignment.
As the Co-Defensive Coordinator at Kingwood High School, and the only defensive backs coach on staff, I made it a point to prepare my guys to play zero man. We weren’t perfect, but in my two years at Kingwood, our DBs have finished at the top of the district in interceptions and pass breakups both seasons.
We led the district with 17 interceptions in the 2024–25 season. In the 2025-26 season we repeated what we did the previous year.
For the first time at Kingwood in this district, Jonathan Ankutse earned 1st Team All-District at corner, and I’ve got two corners heading to college 🫡
