My group's recent work published in PNAS. H. pylori Genomic Risk Score (HpRS) predicts whether a strain is likely to drive progression along Correa’s cascade from gastritis to intestinal metaplasia and gastric cancer. Using intelligent genome-wide SNP analysis on 528 strains, the model achieves relatively good accuracy (AUC up to 0.90) and works across geographic lineages. The key risk variants are not only in classic virulence genes, but also involve core bacterial functions like DNA repair, translation, and metabolism. This study offers a framework for strain-specific risk stratification in gastric cancer prevention pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.26…

"This is the first synthetic species,” microbiologist J. Craig Venter told 60 Minutes’ Steve Kroft in 2010. His team of scientists created a synthetic bacteria designed on a computer, with man-made DNA. Venter says that from concept to completion, it took 15 years and $40 million to make. Venter, who died this week at 79, was one of the most famous scientists in the world, known for his pioneering work in deciphering the human genetic code.
