When people talk about first responders in Portland, itโs most often about the work being done by
@PDXFire and the
@PortlandPolice. And with good reason.
But we cannot forget another critical link in our emergency response chain:
@911BOECโs call-takers and dispatchers.
This week, our city is celebrating National Public Safety Telecommunicator Appreciation Week. As part of that, first thing Monday I went down to our Bureau of Emergency Communications, down on SE 99th off Powell. There, I met with frontline 911 staff and a new class of 16 trainees, to thank them for their tireless service to our city.
24/7 and 365, these are our *first* first responders, who are always ready to pick up the phone and be a light in the darkness in what is often one of the worst moments in a callerโs life.
I am absolutely honored to be fighting for them every day in City Hall, to ensure they have the tools, training, and staff levels to be the best they can be.
Because the next step, reducing our 911 wait and hold times? That's job one, and it enables these first responders to do their jobs with distinction and pride.
