these viral world cup moments are a good reminder that most Americans like most Europeans, most Europeans like most Americans, we enjoy visiting each others’ beautiful countries, and only a tiny share of each have been so ravaged by algorithmic incentives to convince us otherwise

Sports betting is a scourge. Legalization reduced food sufficiency by 2.1% among working-age adults without a college degree, especially during the NFL season. That translates into an estimated 284,000 additional food-insufficient households in 9 states.

90% of people today live with degraded land, unhealthy air, or water stress. In low-income countries, 8 out of 10 people live with all three stressors. But restoring #NaturalSystems can boost growth, jobs, & resilience: wrld.bg/LXKu50WTivj #RebootDevelopment

Painful irony. Controlled burns (CB) are an effective strategy for reducing the risk of large wildfires. Avoiding wildfires reduces the risk of major PM2.5 air pollution spikes. But, the Clean Air Act's non-attainment status mandate limits a county's ability to engage in CB.
We have a new paper in @ScienceMagazine today on the air quality benefits of expanded use of prescribed fire, capably led by @ivanhigueram. Rx fire can lead to substantial net reductions in smoke, but effects will take years to be realized. Link/ deep dive in thread below

Super excited that my Science paper with @emma_k_h and Mandy Pallais about how remote work causes metal health distress was just published! Americans face an epidemic of loneliness. It's time we take action to address the core issues. This doesn't mean a 5-day in-person policy for every company. But it requires reckoning with the uncomfortable truth that the current implementation of WFH is hurting people. We need better-constructed policies to get the best of both worlds.
The rise in remote work caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has substantially increased time spent alone and worsened workers’ mental health, according to a new study in Science based on survey data from more than 500,000 Americans. 📄: scim.ag/43O4lws #SciencePerspective: scim.ag/4x84kkC

Just FYI for the current gen. Not that long ago, I got into the Harvard Econ PhD despite never having done a single pure math course. Just one “math for econ course”. Things might have changed but not that much. This same advice was given back then too. It was incorrect then and still is. This doesn’t mean that math doesn’t matter. Math is very useful for econ PhDs and I wish I had done more. I would have had less catching up to do.
Zane is correct. To get in to an econ PhD, anything other than math classes or econ research is a waste of time. However I think it is sad for our profession that this is the case. Economists who write and spend time with policy makers or industry are much more influential.

I’m really excited about this paper! Some of my work has pointed out problems in empirical work, but this one is all about new 🔧s. If you (or your referees) want to know about the mechanisms by which a treatment affects an outcome, you may be interested. A 🧵.
Want to know about the mechanisms by which a treatment affects an outcome? This paper develops tools for testing hypotheses about mechanisms under weak assumptions. Check it out! New paper by @jondr44 and Kwon: restud.com/testing-mechanism… #REStud #EconX #EconTwitter

22/n) Importantly: we are *not* claiming that climate change is economically harmless. We're arguing that the magnitude of damages is deeply and irreducibly uncertain, and trillion-dollar decisions need to stop being made as if it isn't.
