Their media (and maybe even ours) has primed them to think American food is processed cubes of unidentifiable meat, so the expectations couldn't be lower.
My favorite subplot of the soccer tourists going nuts over the food, is that they are mostly going to the fast food spots and big chains.
Which fine, but not exactly the top of the US culinary experience.
But they seem to be blown away by it for whatever reason.
