After 5 long years, I’m finally finished law school @OsgoodeNews! Law school isn’t an easy place for students w/ disabilities - I came quite close to dropping out twice, but I’m really proud of myself for making it here and grateful for those who got me through it.

There are so many reasons why someone with a legitimate refugee claim might first come to Canada as an international student. (1/5)
My letter to the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants related to the growing number of international students claiming asylum in Canada and potentially unethical advice being given by some of its members.

The judge gave a rare apology to Umar Zameer after he was found not guilty by a jury Sunday. “Mr. Zameer, you’re free to go, sir,” Superior Court Justice Anne Molloy told him. “You have my...deepest apologies for what you have been through.” thestar.com/news/gta/umar-za…

The letter mentioned in this article from a group called "Lawyers for Secure Immigration" is awful, immigration lawyers just blatantly calling migrants from Gaza terrorists. Really shameful. canadianlawyermag.com/practi…

As a disability studies scholar and disabled person in the academy, comments like this are precisely why many students, staff, and faculty choose to not disclose their disability—or only do so under duress due to academic ableism or navigating the inaccessibility of higher ed.

Woah. “There was a 292% increase in students classified with disabilities at the top eight liberal arts colleges over the past 12 years” Pretty strong evidence that a “disabled” label is becoming a fasion accessory for rich kids.

Or - hear me out - increased accessibility and access to accommodations means students who otherwise might not be able to access post-secondary education are now able to do so?

This narrative of students “faking” disabilities either for academic advantage or, as this thread claims, social clout, is incredibly harmful, and actively encourages disbelief and skepticism for those seeking access to necessary accommodations.

The increase in students identifying as disabled in is, contrary to this thread, an unequivocally positive thing. Truly incredible that the response is “they must be faking it” rather than celebrating that in a small way, society has become more accessible in the last 12 yrs.

🛑I wrote about what “fatigue” really means for people with long COVID and ME/CFS, and why this profoundly debilitating symptom is so often misunderstood and trivialized. (This piece also covers PEM.) 1/ theatlantic.com/health/archi…

Pitting asylum seekers against "domestic" unhoused people is a false — and dangerous — dichotomy. Vulnerable groups do not siphon resources from one another; rather, those that hold power — governments — withhold resources from everyone. All homelessness is a policy choice.
