I'm pretty sure it was because we were broke af and could not sign a RB along with all the other gaps we needed to fill, we ended up putting Koundé at RB. Whoch worked fine but then not so much. Not contesting the choice to let him go. Just reminding of the context
Good luck to Sergi Roberto in his next chapter. Grateful for his time at Barça, but I think he served as another example of the club still learning how to make those tough but necessary decisions on players and knowing when to let go of them when their time is up. Remember that Roberto was supposedly getting a contract renewal in 2024 before Flick’s appointment. He went to Como afterwards but wasn’t able to make his mark there over the last two seasons, partly due to physical issues. If you recall his situation at the time, parts of the Barça fanbase were so reluctant to let him go and believed he was essential for the squad development. Not saying he wouldn’t have been helpful for his locker-room presence, but I believe that, way too often, this club is so loyal to the players to the point that it struggles to move on from them even when it should. The squad is a lot better now, but there are still some hard decisions that need to be made (and should’ve been made) this summer regarding certain players’ futures if the club wants to take the next step in the right direction.

Cucurella and Joan Garcia are just the reality. Players can love one club or another, as children or adults, but when it comes to thwir career they will make the moves that best serve them even if it meant going to a rival they hated with passion. As they should..

Nobody would have expected Joan to give up the opportunity to win and compete for every trophy while playing for the biggest club in his home city. And nobody should expect Cucurella to pass on RM either.

I still don't understand why Cristiano would be against this ? Nobody is telling him to retire. He's just required to start on the bench and come on in the 55-70th minute with fresh legs against worn down opposition so he can have the impact he could have. It's not indignifying?
Kevin-Prince Boateng, a huge Ronaldo fan, gave his HONEST opinions on Ronaldo and advised him to stay on the bench! 😮👀

Messi routinely starts on the bench. Comes off midway through the second half. Even sits down matches. It does not at all discount their value so the idea that Cristiano is resisting this is odd. It's better for him.

Cristiano's only stremgth now is he is a poacher. Martinez put him in the middle so he can have no job but put himself in scoring positions. That is literally playing to his strength. Y'all just don't wanna admit he's not him anymore.
France played to Mbappe strength, Norway played to Haaland’s Strength, Argentina played for Messi. But you see Ronaldo, his teammates hate him more than rivals do.

Anyway. People should not make conclusions from the first game in the WC. Argentina lost to KSA in 2022. Spain lost in 2010. Next matches Cristiano will be flanked by Joao and Leao and will get the service he needs to score his tapins and do his suiiis

Honestly it's a really boring groups phase. With 4 extra groups the probability that two decent teams fall in the same one is basically zero, and then the best-thirds qualifying makes the stakes so low. Three draws and a team can still make it.

Too narrow for my liking.

Todo mundo por dentro, sem qualquer jogador aberto e pisando na linha lateral.

Really good analysis from Henry. This is the Ronaldo issue right now. He's playing as a 9, but he's never been a 9 and he's not acting as a 9. Not giving Portugal those traits and it hurt them today.

> Vitinha > Long Season > 2000 minutes in the Ligue 1.
My opinion on Portugal. Roberto Martinez will have blood on his hands if Portugal exits the World Cup early. Secondly, the big Portuguese players did not step up. I’m trying to make excuse for Vitinha, maybe because he’s had a long season. He did not step up. Bruno did not step up. Joao Neves was their best player today, and he also put them ahead. Ronaldo had two good chances but fumbled it, overall I can’t blame him much because the whole team was not good. I understand the coach leaving him on because they needed a goal. How is Tomas Araujo and Renato Veiga the starting CBs? Let’s not forget to give DR Congo some credit, they made it difficult for Portugal. Anyways, what’s your opinion on the game?

Poor Fermin. Pobre españa too cuz that guy got 10000x the fire their midfielders and Yamal-less forwards have combined.

220 and 190 games is fucking crazy.
🇳🇴 Haaland: 57 goals in 51 caps (1.12 per game) 🇭🇺 Puskás: 84 in 85 (0.99) 🇧🇷 Pelé: 77 in 92 (0.84) 🇦🇷 Batistuta: 54 in 77 (0.70) 🇵🇹 Ronaldo: 138 in 221 (0.62) 🇦🇷 Messi: 112 in 193 (0.58) The Norwegian’s scoring rate is unlike anything we’ve seen before. 🤯🔥⚽️

Lautaro really is Higuain. Mf scores when its offside then shits the bed on real chances.
Throwback to Argentina first game at the World Cup when 3 of their goals were disallowed and they ended up losing 2-1 It wasn’t “rigged” for Messi then

With all these hydration break you wonder why a 3-30-minute-part match is not a thing.

De Jong is nearing thirty. He joined Barcelona 8 years. Do you think this is how he should be playing after so long and after that many years at Barcelona ?
I love De Jong and I think he has some qualities that are rare to find, but sometimes he can be annoying. He needs to understand the pace of the game better—when to move the ball fast and when to slow it down. There are moments when he receives the ball, and instead of playing it forward quickly for attackers, he'd rather slow it down and do these meaningless turns. For a player with his insane quality, at this age he should have understood all of this by now. Another thing is he's not daring enough to attack space, give final pass or try shooting from outside the box every once in a while. Being a DM doesn't mean you cant participate in attack and just be giving only sideways passes. Van der Vaart has called him out on this several times, and he still doesn't try to improve these aspects of his game. I am sure this is the aspect of his game Hansi Flick also doesn’t like.

The answer is actually that Brazilian star players nowadays get sold to European clubs at too young an age, depriving them of the important development stage of jogo bonito and sexual depravity required for true Brazilian football excellence.
a lot is made of brazil’s football culture where babies pop out the womb doing round the worlds but it has built an entire country of people too egotistical to play full back or scrappy poaching 9 and that’s why they’ll never win another WC

Did these conversations also happen when the WC was expanded to 32 teams ?

Germany winning 7-1, it makes you question what the point of opening up the tournament to 48 teams was?
