Thomas Hastings (@QUBBusiness) and I have published a piece on @EconObservatory today which looks at the reasons behind economic inactivity and the barriers to work people face. From qualitative evidence we find that the barriers faced are nuanced and complex.

We find while overall rates are similar, there are much higher rates of more severe disability in NI when you drill down in to the data.

I've come across two people this week proclaiming NI low unemployment rate. This is misleading. We have many people unavailable for work: on health waiting lists; carers; people with trauma issues; parents unable to access childcare; disabled; weak skills because of selective schooling. Better to consider employment rate.
