A very interesting but often sad thing about getting older is that more and more people you know or have read or respected begin to fall apart. Some die young. Some get physically ill or cognitively decline. And some develop serious mental illness or lose touch with reality. One weird thing about this era is people who lose touch with reality do so very publicly and find people who encourage their delusions. (But maybe I just have a dim aura).

It was nice to wake up on Easter morning and see that the downed US Air Force officer had been rescued in Iran. I’m happy for the family who likely got good news overnight. I’m grateful that we have such a capable military, that doesn’t leave fine comrades behind.

The Cadets from Old Dominion University who stopped an active shooter, received 8 Meritorious Service Medals. Two of them received Purple Hearts…from the Sergeant Major of the Army and the Secretary of the Army. Absolutely amazing and well deserved.

If the ROTC cadet who stopped the active gunman at Old Dominion University was being taught by LTC Shah, it more than likely means he is a Senior. Meaning he should commission into the Army in the next 90 days. His commissioning ceremony would be the perfect time to award him.

I really like this video for two reasons: One, it highlights that in uniform probably isn’t the right time to air your grievances on social media. There is a way to bring up issues professionally. Two, he owned it. Accountability matters.

I’ve told this story before but it’s worth telling again: When I was deployed in 2013, our 3 man team lived across from a mortar section of 6 people. Their squad leader was a SGT who couldn’t have been more than 22. Every night and every day I would hear him scream “fire mission!” His joes would scurry outside and get on their tubes and get ready to drop rounds and then he would stop them. He was timing them. He did this over and over again, day and night. We were taking a lot of indirect fire on our COP daily in the form of recoilless rifle rounds. Every day they would get on their tubes and every day they were told they couldn’t send rounds back. But their SGT kept them running outside: every day and every night The day finally came: we had been receiving an excessive amount of indirect fire. It just so happened the BDE CDR was visiting. They caught the guys setting up for their next volley of recoilless rifle rounds. This time, we fired first. I have never seen a group of individuals move the way they did. Barely any talking between the crew. Just a well oiled machine sending hate down range. They hated their Squad Leader for waking them up at all hours…but in that moment they all realized what it was for. All that training paid off. It saved lives. They removed a threat from the battlefield and we didn’t receive IDF for the next 40 days. No one in that section was over 22.
