to my researcher friends (at
@openai and those who watched this saga unfold) -- if you want to focus on doing solid *open* and published research, have access to lots of hardware -- there are a few options: Meta, Mistral, etc.
don't let your work get lost in corporate sagas!
Each of those come with some tradeoffs --
* Meta is large and important for society, so certain kinds of research won't be okay, and velocity will be lower.
* Mistral is small and with somewhat limited funding, so there'll be a lot of focus and more limited resources (which is good but also might not be what you want)
* Google Deepmind still publishes, but isn't as open (never was relative to say Meta) -- i hear they wont publish stuff around Gemini, but someone from Google feel free to clarify.
