My book, "Essential Effects", is now available for early access!
"Essential Effects" is about how to safely create, compose, and execute effectful #Scala programs using the
@Typelevel Cats Effect library.

Hello folks 👋
ScalaIO is back for another edition in 2025 🥳
🌐 It will be held at La Grande Crypte, Paris 🇫🇷 on the 17/10
🎟️ Early birds tickets are already open to sales(f: Person => `scala.io`)
🤝 CFP & sponsorships will open very shortly
See you soon 😊
PS to the Trump administration's great patriotic war on girls' dolls and pencils: notice how "unnecessary foreign luxuries" are female-coded. An outboard motor is crammed with Chinese components, but try to imagine Trump asking, "Do Americans really need to own personal boats?"
🗣️ We are thrilled to announce that an edition of ScalaBridge will take place in Lausanne this August!
👀 Stay tuned because more information about ScalaBridge will be shared soon.
Just added slides for my talk "Tagless Final for Humans" to my page of talks:
noelwelsh.com/landing/talks/
I gave this talk today at @scalarconf. The core is a new encoding for tagless final in Scala, which makes much better use of Scala's features than the standard encoding.
Yesterday I gave at talk at Imperial College on the uses of dualities in programming. We look at the dualities between data and codata, calls and returns, and ASTs and stack machines.
Slides are at noelwelsh.com/landing/talks/ and the benchmarks are taken from github.com/scalawithcats/sta…
CfP is now open
👀 Scala foundations, libraries, tooling, industrial adoption, community, LLM, and more — all experience levels welcome.
Submit your idea, share with colleagues, or encourage new speakers to give it a try!
Apply by April 6th 👉

We're hearing that some people are acting aggressively toward our plow drivers.
Stop it.
They have to drive slow to accurately put down product without wasting it.
How 'bout we give our plow drivers a smile, or even a nice little wave.
ALT Two meme photos of the sideyeing husky dog stacked on top of one another. One caption next to the top photo says Washingtonians when they want icy roads to be treated. The caption below next to the same meme says Washingtonians when our (WSDOT's) plows drive 35 miles per hour to treat icy roads.
When the horse monad arrived, Cassandra foresaw its true nature and warned of the destruction that would soon befall Troy. But Priam and the court refused to listen; consumed by their search for a deeper monadic essence, they could not recognize the folly of unsafePerformIO.
Hi daughter Cassandra, on the other hand, received the ability to explain monads to anyone, but was cursed that no one would ever believe her explanation because it seemed too simple.
By granting him the Monadus touch, the gods ensured no one would ever be able to provide an example of impredicativity without higher-rank polymorphism. And thus Sisyphus's fate was sealed.
King Monadus was given the gift of being able to understand anything, no matter how difficult, but then he would subsequently be unable to explain his understanding to anyone else.
In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was the king of Corinth. For cheating death, the gods condemned him to eternal punishment: attempting to understand the difference between impredicativity and higher-rank polymorphism, only for his understanding to crumble every time it neared complet
I wrote up a case study on designing a DSL for terminal interaction. You might find it a good read if you like to see programming theory jargon (codata! monads!
composition!) tied to actual use cases.
