Today is my last day at Hot Pod and @verge. It's been a challenging and rewarding two years covering the podcasting industry, and I will miss my time here dearly. I shared some parting thoughts (and a whole lot of thank yous): theverge.com/2024/4/18/24134…
Goodbye for now, Hot Pod (@verge)! Hope you come back soon with podcast and audio industry news.
Thanks for everything, @arshapiro90!
ALT Hey, everyone — Jake here. I wanted to give you all an update on Hot Pod ahead of Ariel’s last day. It’s been a delight reading Ariel’s editions of this newsletter over the past two years, and I’m excited to see what she does next. We’re going to miss having her around.
We won’t have a new writer in place by next week, so we’re planning to put Hot Pod on hiatus while we figure out next steps. Hot Pod has been an important fixture in the podcasting world, and we value the community we’ve helped bring together in this space. You’ll be the first to hear our plans for the future of the newsletter.
Now, back over to Ariel for the day’s news.
“The beauty of podcasting is that, as a creator, you have a deep relationship with your audience. They travel with you from week to week, or day to day.” —Stephen Dubner interviewed by @arshapiro90 at @onairfest
Steel and 123 other House GOP members sponsor the Life at Conception Act, which would "grant equal protection" to "each and every member of the species homo sapiens at all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization." It also mentions cloning. No carveout for IVF.
The new multi-year deal will allow for the show to be distributed on YouTube, Apple, and others. Video will also be available on YouTube, unlike the new Call Her Daddy arrangement.
Welp, I’m a free agent again. My second layoff in less than a year, and I feel like laughing and crying all at once! If you’re hiring, please get in touch: jclarachan@gmail.com
I am very excited to finally reveal our Hot Pod Summit headliner! @iraglass will join us to talk about how he turned @ThisAmerLife into an independent business that has produced some of the most daring series in the industry. 🧵theverge.com/2024/1/17/24041…
And for the first time, I will be joining @onairfest to host a talk with Stephen Dubner on his journey from publishing to audio, his take on podcasting’s rocky year, and what is next for @Freakonomics .
Plus, @askhalid will be joining Hot Pod Summit for the first time. Very stoked to have her on board this year and announce what other programming we have in the works. Stay tuned!
New: WNYC laid off staff and cut shows last year, including the well-known and respected podcast Death, Sex & Money.
Now, Slate is buying it. (Yay for some good podcast news!)

So @Law360 and @LexisNexis management have decided to discontinue our weekly news podcast Pro Say for reasons that have not been sufficiently explained to me. I disagree with the decision and will keep pressing for answers, but it's goodbye for now.
