The scapegoating of #Christians in #Iran is the focus of our 2026 annual report. Nearly twice as many were arrested in 2025 than in 2024, and more than twice as many were imprisoned. Sentences also got harsher: Christians received a total of 280 years in prison sentences, and 11 individuals received sentences of over 10 years each. “For 47 years, the Iranian people have been subjected to a regime that not only consistently fails to uphold human rights for its citizens, but brutally quashes dissenting voices, opinions or beliefs,” the report states. “This report details the violations throughout 2025 experienced by just one section of society – the #Christian community.”

A theft yesterday at a #Russian #Orthodox church in #Tehran has shed light again on the types of #churches permitted to operate in Iran today, and those that are not. The Church of St Nicholas is the only Russian Orthodox church still functioning in Iran today, when once there were around 50. The other churches still permitted to hold services are #Assyrian, #Armenian, or Roman #Catholic, with Persian-language services outlawed to prevent attendance by the growing number of #Christian #converts. One church that used to offer such services, the Evangelical Church of #Mashhad, was demolished last week after being forcibly closed for decades. Meanwhile, the only three remaining #Anglican churches in Iran – St Luke’s in #Isfahan, St Paul’s in Tehran, and St Simon the Zealot’s in #Shiraz – have not been permitted to reopen since the Covid-19 pandemic. #Article18 estimates that there are around 800,000 #Christians in Iran today, the vast majority of them Christian converts, who have no #place2worship and therefore meet together in private homes in what have become known as “#house_churches”. Two #house_church members have been released after serving 5-year sentences for “engaging in deviant propaganda contrary to the holy religion of Islam” & “connections with foreign leaders”. #Ahmad_Sarparast & #Ayoob_Poor_Rezazadeh were released in May, but the news has only reached #Article18 now, as communication lines have been slowly restored in #Iran after an 88-day #Internet shutdown. The pair were first arrested back in September 2021, and began serving their sentences in May 2022. In October 2023, they were released from prison to serve the remainder of their sentences as what are known as “open sentences”, whereby prisoners can remain outside prison but must endure forced labour. For the next two and a half years, they had to work in local factories, without pay, until on 4 April 2026 they were unexpectedly sent back to prison. Ayoob and Ahmad were finally released on 11 and 16 May, respectively, and told that their sentences could be considered completed. A #Christian convert who was among over 50 arrested by #Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence following last year’s 12-day #war with #Israel has died in a bus crash. @Hamed_Mohebbi, a 40-year-old cafe owner, was on his way home after visiting some of the rehabilitating drug addicts he helped to support when the crash took place. Hamed was detained for 6 weeks following his arrest last June, when coffee supplies worth around $20,000 were confiscated from him. His court case was still ongoing when he died, but had been postponed due to the war. An #Evangelical church in #Mashhad has been demolished, without warning or explanation. The church, which once offered #Persian-speaking services before its forced closure more than two decades ago, was demolished on the morning of 4 June. A former member of the church told #Article18 it had been "a safe haven for many over the years". "I myself took refuge in the church when my father kicked me out of my home because I converted to Christianity. I converted to faith and was baptised in that church, but today the building no longer exists," Rev Mansour Khajehpour said. An Iranian pastor who has lived in #Armenia since 2019 has appealed to the @UN after his #passport was revoked. #Masoud_Taheri fled #Iran after being arrested for his #house_church activities and has not returned since. During his time in Armenia, the #Christian convert has set up a business in #Yerevan, but as he prepared for a recent business trip to Spain, he discovered that his passport had been revoked. #Christians have been among the more than 6,000 #Iranians arbitrarily arrested and in some cases subjected to enforced disappearances since the start of the war, according to a new report by @Amnesty. “Authorities have arbitrarily arrested, threatened and/or summoned hundreds of protesters; human rights defenders; lawyers; journalists and other media workers; civil society activists; labour rights’ activists; students; teachers; justice-seeking families of protesters and bystanders unlawfully killed or arbitrarily executed; ethnic minorities, including Ahwazi Arabs, Baluchis, and Kurds; and religious minorities, including Baha’is and Christians,” the report states. It cites the example of Christian convert Mary Mohammadi, a former prisoner of conscience, who according to Amnesty “has been subjected to enforced disappearance since late February 2026”. “According to an informed source, she had travelled from #Tehran to #Ahvaz, #Khuzestan province, and was in contact with her family until around 26 February 2026 before communication ceased,” the report states. “The authorities have refused to disclose her fate or whereabouts to her family but, according to information gathered by Amnesty International, she was initially held in a Ministry of Intelligence detention facility in Ahvaz before being transferred to an undisclosed location on 2 April 2026.” Amnesty warns that Mary and the other detainees are “at grave risk, particularly amid reports of #torture and other ill-treatment in detention and deaths in custody in suspicious circumstances”. A Christian convert recently sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison has reportedly gone on #hunger_strike in #EvinPrison in protest. #Ghazal_Marzban, a #Catholic whose husband has #Parkinsons disease, has been on hunger strike since last Monday, 25 May, according to HRANA, and her physical condition is said to have deteriorated. Ghazal was re-arrested in January, days after the massacre of thousands of protesters, including at least 22 Christians. A remembrance service was held at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on Saturday to commemorate the many 1000s killed during the protests in #Iran earlier this year. A Christian convert in #Evin Prison in need of urgent medical care continues to be denied treatment and is at risk of partial blindness, Article18 understands. #Mahshar_Parandin, who has a heart condition and two tumours, was reportedly sent to hospital last week for a test, but returned to prison without being treated, according to the Persian-language Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). “This is despite the fact that the prison’s medical doctor has diagnosed that she needs a cardiac angiogram and surgery for the tumours,” HRANA’s source reported. And according to Article18’s sources, Mahshar’s tumours have continued to visibly grow, not only affecting her balance, movement and speech, but putting her at risk of losing sight in one of her eyes.
