Shamubeel Eaqub: Myth that if state got out of way someone else would deliver. Won’t have healthy affordable houses built by private sector. Need to raise revenue to do good things. Don’t have time to keep killing children with rheumatic fever. We can make tangible difference
Max Rashbrooke: What we are doing now is not enough for those in poverty. People are suffering day by day. Until we change inequality will grow and won’t get better. #taxislove
Lisa Marriott: Needs a global solution as it is a global problem. The problem is getting everybody on board. #taxislove
Max Rashbrooke: Need to force companies to pay taxes where they make money not where they choose to pay tax. Pay taxes where sales are - allocate profits to that country and pay that tax tare and prevents siphoning off #taxislove
Shamubeel Eaqub: Apple’s ingenuity is greater in taxes than in the phones they make! #taxislove
Shamubeel Eaqub: Do Australians eat more veggies than us because vegetables are taxed at a lower rate? #taxislove
Max Rashbrooke: Recall argument in UK about whether mallowpuffs are cakes or biscuits as they are treated differently in the way they are taxed #taxislove
LisaMarriott: (on changes to GST): The more we move away from simple tax system you generate complexity around purchases - if someone buys a potato to plant in the ground, is that a food item or something else? #taxislove
Shamubeel Eaqub: Tax is one part of arsenal with dealing with health issues. Favour sugar tax because such a huge public health issue. But would never be big enough in beginning to change behaviour. Public policy works better when using not just one tool. #taxislove
Lisa Marriott: Introducing sugar tax could change behaviour. Problem is it needs to be large enough to make impact #taxislove
Shamubeel Eaqub: Lot of things can do in NZ. Land tax is favourite of mine but needs to come with concessions. Got to show thinking about equity and transition people in. #taxislove @SEaqub
Shamubeel Eaqub: Need to keep evolving for shifts in society. There is no one perfect answer. #taxislove @SEaqub
Lisa Marriott: CGT not only option for taxing wealth. We don’t have inheritance or death taxes. Lot of countries have combinations. #taxislove
Shamubeel Eaqub: Govt is fearful about upsetting people. There are ways to rebalance it. In NZ we pay too much tax on work & consumption because there is no tax on capital. Many people in future could have more money in back pocket. #taxislove @SEaqub
Lisa Marriott: (on Capital Gains Tax) If people understood how it would work and who would pay then we would see a lot less opposition to it. Your own family home won’t be subject to it and the tax is only on the gain. There is a real communications issue #taxislove
Panel: Brightline test becoming more radical over time as it gets longer and longer. Sneak it in and don’t call it a tax. #taxislove
Max Rashbrooke: Change creates own reality. Banning smoking in pubs changed reality. If Govt had courage of Capital Gains Tax and brought in would be harder to unwind by future govts #taxislove
Lisa Marriott: Inland Revenue funding cut and not seeing response to the egregious behaviour with reliance on whistleblowers #taxislove
Lisa Marriott: Taxing wealth - what NZ does is different. We’re only taxing wealth on small number of transactions and this leads to problematic behaviour including issues with housing #taxislove
