🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Food Plan is a failed opportunity to tackle food inequity. Malnutrition is happening in 🇬🇧. We need a radical policy that prioritises vulnerable people & make #FoodSystems improve our health, lives and environment. ids.ac.uk/?p=82893 @IDS_UK @FoodEquityCtr

Very interesting stat that highlights a strinking inequality:in 2020, lowest income group spent 23% of their income on food at home; 3rd 7%; and richest <4%.
Curious about the relationship between consumer spending on different types of food? By income? Over time? Check out our new data dashboards here: ag.purdue.edu/cfdas/resource… jaysonlusk.com/blog/2022/6/1…

Today, @NICEComms have published guidance for the first two treatments of the UK's world-first antibiotic subscription project. This is an important step in our global fight against AMR that will enable innovative antibiotic R&D to save patient lives. bbc.co.uk/news/health-610680…

New publication from @ZELSprogramme in 🇲🇲 How do agri-food intermediaries affect #FoodSafety in #LMICs? People in #LMICs are demanding more animal-based food ➡️increased pressure for #ValueChains to supply meat ↔️actors lack infrastructure to ensure #FoodSafety (1/n)

Livestock intermediaries... ☑facilitate selling sick animals, partly in response to increasing demand for meat ☑avoid trading dead and very sick animals because of social sanctions ☑️provide farmers with other services like vet. healthcare services (2/n)

To improve #FoodSafety in #LMICs, interventions need to... 1⃣focus on improving infrastructure along value chains to detect food safety concerns; 2⃣improve vet. health and market information systems to reduce farmers' dependence on intermediaries doi.org/10.1007/s12571-022-0…

Day 6 of Putin's war on #Ukraine🇺🇦 - more suffering by brave citizens. Russian people are also victim of this unjustified act of terror. This has to stop.
1
Great to see Europe and the world coming together to support Ukraine. We really need to re-think our long-term energy supply for a peaceful and greener future on our planet. Europe's dependence on Russian oil should not cost Ukrainian lives - now or in the future.

Also, I wish we could have been more compassionate toward those fleeing violence from e.g. Syria, Afganistan, Ethiopia... We are just humans who want peace and the best possible future for our children. Suffering from violence knows no border, nationality or race.

It was a pleasure to speak at the Future Leaders Against AMR. Check out this intiative, supporting a brilliant group of early career professionals, passionate about #AMR. We need more inter- and trans-discplinarity to tackle this global issue. futureleadersagainstamr.org/ @GovettAnna

Me: received a revision email Reviewers: "paper is pretty good, accept if revised" Senior editor: "You don't cite any paper from this journal. Cite more papers from our journal." This sounds strange to me. What is the best course of action? #AcademicChatter #EconTwitter

Sounds like we need this #FoodSystems approach in high-income countries as well, not just in LMICs.
The #UNFSS2021 shined a light on our #foodsystems and underlined the urgent need for action to remedy shortcomings while supporting the consolidation of sustainable, resilient, healthy food systems, says @CGIAR's Marie Ruel and @markincolombia. on.cgiar.org/3hT8M1o
As #UNFSS21 kicks off, our article @_Food_Policy questions whether consolidating food production in the hands of a few can help improve #NutritionSecurity. While #PrivateSector is no doubt an important player, smaller # means political power. 1/n
Ebara et al. @ayako_ebata @Jodie_Thorpe identify four bottlenecks that disincentivize private sectors to comply with large-scale food fortification in Bangladesh. Enforcement should focus on the origin bulk items by big producers. Available online: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…!

When these large-scale, influential food producers are unwilling to comply with #FoodFortification rules, it becomes difficult to enforce them. This results in more scrutinization of smaller actors, who lack financial and technical means to comply. 2/n
1
Working with private sector to transform #FoodSystems is important. But we need to work against the private interest of large cooprations and make food systems serve the health and wellbeing of marginalized people across the world. 3/n
What is the role of #PrivateSector for #NutritionSecurity? After years of implementation, private sector compliance to #FoodFortification is rarely adequate. @amritasaha @_Food_Policy @NatureFoodJnl
