I tested if HR size declines with pop density in a cyclical species (hares) and how this interacts with food-add treatment. Looked like a possible trade-off situation to us... read the paper for more.
Never thought I’d reach this level of scientific boujee - our @Nature Correspondence article was just published!
@tonyrwalker1 & I argue there needs to be accountability & global unity in tackling #plasticpollution, nations shouldn’t be able to opt out

Still can scarcely believe it myself! Winning an award named after legendary Prof. Hanski is a great honour & deeply humbling. Grateful to Oecologia, my amazing coauthors @sjleroux @wildlifeevoeco @YolandaWiersma @TravisHeckford @balluffi@bellarichmond, & field assistants 🥾🐰🌱
Matteo Rizzuto, a postdoc in @SchmitzLab, was named the winner of the Hanski Prize by the journal Oecologia for his paper on how food chemistry drives range size of snowshoe hares in boreal forests.

Hey! I am running for student council member on the Canadian Society of Ecology and Evolution @CSEE_SCEE and I would love your support! More info on the candidates here: csee-scee.ca/csee-election-2… voting ends July 31st!
Awesome day in YEG celebrating @boutinlab’s career mentoring students, uncovering the unknown, and propelling 🇨🇦 science forward 🐿 🦌 🐰. Generations of scientists that influenced him (Krebs, Sinclair, etc) and who he’s influenced (us, innumerable) came together. Wonderful 🍻
Congratulations to County College of Morris student Peter Balluffi-Fry, an International Studies major, who is the recipient of the Point Foundation’s David C. Kleiman Scholarship. CCM is PROUD of his successes!

Four years ago, a scientist I'd never met approached me and said: "I think you are probably wrong."
Instead of arguing, we collaborated on a study to see if humans possess "nutritional wisdom."
What we learned will surprise you! 🧵
I personally believe that academic twitter is very toxic & negative for incoming PhD students. Let us enjoy this excitement, we are nervous enough as is. Telling us how difficult it is is not helping & surely is not great advice.

New paper in press! This time, no data- just thoughts and discussion on the benefits of using ecological stoichiometry as a framework for studying terrestrial herbivore nutritional ecology.

The ideas behind this paper originated from my MSc thesis book end, which I adapted into a manuscript with the help of E. Vander Wal, @EChampagnePhD, and @sjleroux.
We measured snowshoe hare feeding rates and weight change in response to spruce qualities and feeding choices respectively. We found that hares with greater preferences for high-quality spruce lost less weight during experiments.
Read the paper to see energetic demands, like coat insulation (coat colour) and ambient temperature, influenced #snowshoehare feeding behaviours. #ecology#wildlife
