Ever wonder why you get so sleepy during conference talks? Turns out lots of conference venues aren't well-ventilated, causing CO2 to rise to levels that cause drowsiness (>1000ppm). Data from @keflavich shows this steady rise over the first 50min of a conference session.

We all LOVE to do lip service for better maternity leave policies in academia (and yes, let's work on that) but as a professor and mom of two, I can confidently state there's more to it. Research doesn't take a pause during leave and we all need to STEP UP to support each other.

3. MEETINGS. just, like, any expectation that i can reliably attend regular meetings when I return from leave, because let’s be honest, when babe is so tiny I am still caring for them tons and working when I can between that, not when my calendar says so.

How about other folks? Academia is not like other jobs in a lot of ways, how can we help to support each other better?

Inspired by this ridiculous/ awesome exchange, I spent some time getting to know GPT-4 today. It helped write a decent homework question for a graduate astrophysics class, gave me advice on baby sleep and home renovations, and wrote these gems (below) I thought you might enjoy.
I gave GPT-4 a budget of $100 and told it to make as much money as possible. I'm acting as its human liaison, buying anything it says to. Do you think it'll be able to make smart investments and build an online business? Follow along 👀
