On 16 June, via the Lords, they restored Supplementary Vote for regional mayors effective immediately.
FPTP was "fine" when Labour won. Now, facing Reform's momentum, they want Lib Dem & Green 2nd preferences to prop them up in places like Greater Manchester (if Burnham wins today & triggers a mayoral contest).
Critics (including Lord Hayward) call the timing deliberate to block Reform. Government says it's just "restoring" the pre-2021 system.
Changing rules mid-game erodes trust. This isn't about "fairer mandates" it's protecting power.
