When it comes to explicit and systematic reading instruction having students raise their hands is most likely a strategy that DOES NOT lead to improvement in the reading performance of MOST students.
To make this instructional shift (no longer asking kids to raise their hands to respond) many teachers will require support to understand why, and the alternatives to implement it.
