UN in Libya’s Ra’idat programme graduates its second cohort on #InternationalYouthDay Thirty-four young women from across Libya graduated on Tuesday from the UN in Libya’s Ra’idat training programme, marking International Youth Day in the presence of the Special Representative of the Secretary General for Libya, @HannaTetteh. The second cohort of the programme ended their year of training by delivering seven different group presentations on youth empowerment in Libya communication campaigns in front of their families, mentors, UN staff, the international community and the SRSG. “Libyan women face many challenges when trying to engage in their societies and lead. Those can be cultural, they can be political, they can even come from their own families, and sometimes they can even be violent,” said SRSG Tetteh adding that it was crucial women’s voices – young and old – were heard in all walks of life to ensure that Libya’s future was sustainable for all. #youthday ow.ly/IR1w50WFeEV

To mark the halfway point of this year’s Ra’idat programme, and the participant’s completion of the UK Government’s Campaigning Excellence e-learning platform, SRSG @HannaTetteh joined participants to talk about the importance of women’s leadership. Alongside the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General, Stephanie Koury and the Deputy British Ambassador, Thomas Phipps, the SRSG received presentations from the young women on the programme showcasing their work and handed out certificates for completing the e-learning training. “Everyone has an important role to play in the future of Libya. But women, and especially young women, can lead the change be that driving force for difference in their communities,” said SRSG Tetteh adding that it was important that the young women on the programme share the skills they have learnt with others in their communities. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to share my insights with 32 young 🇱🇾women who are aspiring to become leaders. I reflected on my 26-year professional journey, particularly as a woman and as a leader. I hope my journey and insights inspire young women to embrace their leadership.

In more airline woe, I have flown @AirFranceFR to Sweden and back to Tunis. On the way out they lost the baggage. They had one hour between flights. Now, on the way back 1.5, guess what? No bag. I want compensation. This is so unbelievably poor.

Just flown @SAS for the first time. They charge for water. You cannot actually get a cup of water in a flight over two hours. It is a luxury one has to pay for. Except it is not, is it?! Won’t fly again. Super poor.

I am so proud to be launching the second round of Ra'idat. It is an immense privilege to train young Libyan women to be better able to engage in the political process and have the skills to work together, lead and advocate on key issues.

To mark #internationalyouthday2024 a group of young Libyan men and women exchanged ideas and recommendations on how best to foster civic space and improve perceptions about the need for civil society among communities.
