🧠 3 things I’ve been thinking about lately while teaching and coaching...
Every coach and teacher has their own toolkit. Over the years, I’ve found that the smallest adjustments in how we communicate can make the biggest difference in how children learn and engage.
Here are 3 essential tools I always look to use in my sessions:
1️⃣ The Whistle for Clean Transitions 🎯 I use a whistle strictly to start and stop practices. It gives the children a clear, sharp audio cue that differentiates between "listening to instructions" and "time to move." It saves my voice and instantly commands focus.
2️⃣ Strategic Tone of Voice 🗣️ Our tone carries more weight than our actual words. If I need to correct a behaviour or deliver a critique, I’ll drop my tone to a lower, calmer register. But the moment it’s time to praise? The energy shifts upwards. That clear contrast helps kids instantly understand feedback and feel the impact of encouragement.
3️⃣ Matching & Bringing the Energy ⚡ I know this approach might not be for everyone, but I always try to match—and then elevate—the energy in the room. When you bring passion and enthusiasm, the children feed off it. It naturally drives up the fun, which in turn, drives up the intensity and effort of the session.
Every coach has their own style, and there’s no single "right" way to do it—this is just what works for me.
To my fellow coaches and teachers: What are the non-negotiable tools or techniques in your coaching toolkit? 👇
