Lots of kids come to school with their invisible backpacks, weighted with struggles.
Stress, worry, fear, anxiety, trauma, lack of physical needs, loneliness, anger, sadness, & hopelessness can make them so heavy; too heavy for learning to happen.
Notice & love them instead.
Only 3% of individuals detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during the first 14 months of the second Trump administration had a violent felony conviction, according to an ABC News analysis of government data. abcnews.link/PbkSs1W
Should we measure education progress by "growth" in test scores or how many students are "proficient"?
Neither is perfect alone--but too much focus on growth can obscure continuing inequities.
Which is what has happened in DC.

ALT A sliced apple half stands upright on a reflective surface. Large text beside it reads, "Strong core instruction prevents the need for most Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions." The logo "lead inclusion" is in the bottom left corner.
Yes! In a safe and supportive learning community, students respond to cold calling well even if they don’t have a response they feel is adequate. They have options for support, and know that misconceptions and mistakes are part of grappling in the learning.
One common instructional practice that I moved away from during my more progressive years as a teacher was cold calling. I was told it was inequitable to call on students who had not raised their hands, so I refused to do it. I genuinely believed I was doing what was best for students who were less likely to volunteer. Looking back, I could not have been more wrong.
When cold calling is implemented within a classroom culture where it is a natural and expected part of learning, and students understand both how and why it is used, it becomes one of the most equitable instructional practices available. It creates an environment in which all students are expected to think, remain attentive, and be prepared to contribute. Rather than allowing a handful of eager students to dominate participation, it communicates that every student’s thinking matters.
I find this to be true of many progressive practices I once embraced. At the time, I believed they were the most equitable choices I could make for students. However, after examining the evidence and seeing their effects in practice, I came to realize that many of them often produced the opposite outcome of what was intended.

The legacy of this @POTUS won't be the monuments he builds to himself but the destruction of faith in public institutions for his own power and profit.
He wants to rewrite or erase history because he knows it won't be kind to him.
Nothing exposed Trump's weakness more than this.
He literally threw a tantrum and walked away because his lie about the election was challenged.
If he was able to actually defend it, he wouldn't have ran away like a pathetic loser.
Trump quits his interview: "You're either crooked or you're stupid…Your elections are crooked. You're crooked. Meet The Press is crooked. And so is ABC, and CBS, and CNN…Alright, let's call it quits because I've had enough. Thank you, darling. Have a good time."
As Daniel Willingham says, “Children having broad background knowledge is central to reading comprehension.”
This episode is a powerful reminder that knowledge is essential for helping students make meaning from what they read.
