My theory on the surgeon who took out the liver instead of the spleen:
First, we know it started laparoscopic and went to open. Autopsy revealed the entire liver was gone and spleen was still in place.
My guess is he mistook the left lobe of the liver for the spleen while laparoscopic, began dissecting at the base and expectedly got into massive bleeding.
He opened, realized what he had done, but panicked and tried to cover it up by removing the liver and trying to pass it off as an enlarged spleen (but almost certainly tried to refuse sending it to pathology).
I know that sounds just absolutely bonkers, but the only other explanation is that a legit general surgeon didn’t know the difference between the liver and the spleen in an open laparotomy patient, which is just not possible.
