Why was trouble inevitable? The leadership of the world’s fourth most populous country has shown signs of independent thinking, as it struggles with economic pressures. Indonesia recently refused to sign a promise to give US jet bombers blanket permission to use Indonesian airspace in a future war on China. The Pentagon was not happy. . THE NED IS ACTIVE Furthermore, President Prabowo Subianto last year criticized foreign NGOs, claiming to “promote democracy”, for interfering in the politics of sovereign countries and weaponizing human rights. This was seen as a reference to the infamous US National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a CIA spin-off which has been active in creating street protests in Indonesia. The NED has been thrown out of Venezuela, Egypt, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Russia and other places for financing, fomenting and training anti-government movements.
