I am in my 20th year of teaching full time and I have a Master's degree in secondary education. Public school works. It's where my three kids go and we have private options nearby. Public school...like almost everything else in education can be done well or poorly. Don't generalize.
I taught public school for 20 years and have a Masters degree in education I have one piece of advice: Homeschool your kids

For too long it’s been, praise the parents when kids are well-behaved, and blame the teacher when they aren’t.

"One study of..college students...found that they spent nearly 40% of class time scrolling social meda, checking email or watching videos on their laptops." Precisely why I have a phone ban in my classes. They can't concentrate with phones. It's also incredibly rude for students to be on phones during class. nytimes.com/2025/11/16/opini…

England has transformed its schools using ideas from US educators at exactly the same time the US has foundered (& ignored those ideas). Agree w this excellent @NickGibbUK piece (& honored to have earned a small mention). fordhaminstitute.org/nationa…

The best section of the Steplab documentary for me is minute 20 of episode 4. If you think PD is useless at your school, watch this. If you think what this school is doing is weird, that's because useless PD has been normalized and weird PD is weird because is hasn't been.

There is a two tier system of public education in American schools. One tier is the overwhelmingly majority of students who go to school day in and day and get zero rights to an organized, non-disruptive education. The other tier is the students with labels who have so many federal guarantees that they are allowed to hijack the education of anyone in their way without any recourse whatsoever.

Read books that interest you. Watch documentaries that interest you. Learn about things that interest you. This is how you feed passion. Too many kids have zero passion for anything meaningful. This is how dark ages in society emerge.

Why do other countries continue to out perform the 🇺🇸 in education? It has a lot to do with the fact that they value education and educators so much more than we do.

Decades of abandoning knowledge for "21st Century Skills" has produced a generation of kids that can't read, write, or reason but can make a Power Point or Canva slideshow with which to boringly read off with their back semi-turned to the class. You can't build anything lasting without memory. You can't think clearly about a world you don't know anything about.
