And life expectancy was 32. Personally I'm a fan of a world where kids survive childhood because of vaccines Where people don't die of infections that you can't treat And cool new mRNA based vaccines treat cancer so people can live long healthy lives But that's me
Just 100 years ago: Most dairy products were consumed raw. Most honey was unprocessed. Seed oils were not commonly used. Genetically modified (GMO) foods did not exist. PFAS chemicals had not yet been developed. Synthetic food dyes were not in widespread use. Plant-based meat alternatives did not exist. High-fructose corn syrup had not been invented. Autoimmune diseases, heart disease, cancer, and obesity were far less common than they are today. Do you see what is happening?

The only way proven way to suppress and eradicate NWS is through SIT. The current USDA plan is necessary but not fast enough for the unfolding crisis. Additional sterilized flies are needed now. There are modular options that were scientifically validated in the 1950s that have potential to scale within months to provide an initial operational capability to start closing the sterilized fly gap long before the planned fixed facilities may come on line at the end of 2027, at the earliest. The fly is not waiting to spread, why should we wait to accelerate new options?
Unfortunately you will be seeing these cases pop up like whac-a-moles from here on out, because we currently do not have the number of sterile flies produced to stop this Only a matter of time until it leaves Texas and spills into other states

Sending Americans who are exposed to or infected with Ebola to Kenya (instead of bringing them home) is an extraordinarily bad idea and it will backfire On the surface -- it seems smart. Why not send people elsewhere instead of bringing them home For three reasons actually 🧵
Trump administration plan to quarantine Americans suspected of having high-risk exposures to #Ebola in Kenya meets on-the-ground opposition. The plan to quarantine people exposed & treat cases abroad relies on good will the US may not have right now. washingtonpost.com/world/202…

Ebola in DRC's Ituri Province. 246 suspected cases, 65 deaths. If confirmed, already one of the 10 biggest Ebola outbreaks in history We're just hearing about this now? That makes no sense. Those numbers take weeks to accumulate Suspected cases in Bunia, the provincial capital — a city with airports. That matters enormously for spread CDC and global partners need to surge resources in. Ituri is where the 2018 outbreak ignited. A slow response creates unnecessary risks to people everywhere
Ebola Virus Disease outbreak confirmed in Ituri Province, DRC Africa CDC is closely monitoring the situation and convening an urgent high-level coordination meeting today with the DRC, Uganda, South Sudan and global partners to reinforce cross-border surveillance, preparedness and outbreak response efforts. Following consultations with DRC’s Ministry of Health and National Public Health Institute, preliminary laboratory results from L’Institut National de Recherche Biomédical - INRB Kinshasa detected Ebola virus in 13 of 20 samples tested. About 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths have been reported, mainly in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones. Four deaths have been reported among laboratory-confirmed cases. Suspected cases have also been reported in Bunia, pending confirmation. 🔗 Read full statement: ow.ly/g2Z450Z02vj #EbolaOutbreak #HealthSecurity #DRC

Literally no one who did more to advance our understanding of -- and treatments for -- heart disease than Gene Braunwald. Ever. One of the greatest physicians of the last 50 years has passed away at the age of 96 Know someone who survived a heart attack? You can thank EB
The American Heart Association mourns the passing of the legendary cardiologist Eugene Braunwald, M.D., widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in the history of cardiovascular medicine. Over seven decades, his work reshaped the understanding and treatment of heart disease, leading many to call him the father of modern cardiology. Braunwald was a lifelong contributor to the American Heart Association, helping advance its research and scientific mission, and was honored with some of the Association’s highest honors for his lasting influence on cardiovascular care and research. His influence extended well beyond his own discoveries, as generations of Association‑supported investigators, clinicians and academic leaders were trained by Braunwald or guided by the clinical trial standards and mentorship models he helped establish. newsroom.heart.org/news/amer…

Gene Braunwald died at 96. In a normal world, this would be front page of the NYT and WSJ. The father of modern cardiology. Fled the Holocaust as a boy Went on to save millions of lives The most important clinician-scholar of the last 50 years. We should all know his name

This is just absolute, unequivocal bullshit. The IAEA says this is a lie. The UN says its a lie. The US intelligence community can't back up this assertion, nor can the Israelis. This is as bad as claims that Iraq had WMDs if not worse.
Trump: "If we didn't hit within 2 weeks, they would've had a nuclear weapon. When crazy people have nuclear weapons bad things happen."

Jeremy is right (and knows more about responding to Ebola than most) There have been 12 Ebola/Marburg outbreaks in the past 4 years Because of USAID and our work with WHO All of them have been stamped out locally with zero cases in the US Elon's gutting of USAID and our withdrawal from WHO leaves the world -- and us -- vulnerable
So - I've actually led Ebola outbreak response at @USAID. This is bunk from Elon. They have laid off most of the experts, they're bankrupting most of the partner orgs, have withdrawn from WHO, and muzzled CDC. What's left is a fig-leaf effort to cover their asses politically.

.@RoKhanna is right When I was @WhiteHouse46 I couldn't even accept a bottle of water from a lobbyist And when I left, was told I couldn't lobby the WH for 2 years Those were good policies made through Executive Order by President Biden We should codify them into law
BREAKING: Representative Ro Khanna has introduced the Drain the Swamp Act. It will ban White House officials from accepting gifts from lobbyists or becoming lobbyists during the Trump term.
Community note
This is permanent. It is not only for the Trump term, per Rep. Khanna’s tweet. x.com/rokhanna/statu…

This 3 minute video by @RepAuchincloss is exactly right and worth your time. Of course it’s easy to find some silly study or even the occasional bad science in nih grants But the solution to that is better peer review, not gutting the scientific enterprise
Basic science is inspired by curiosity, accountable to evidence, and subject to peer review. Politics should have no role.

Essential thread by @Farzad_MD - we should be thanking our lucky stars for existence of EIS and folks like Farzad, @JeffDean’s father, and so many others, the very best and bravest and most curious and most determined. Instead: shuttering it? Absolute madness.
1/ After residency at Mass General Hospital, I reported to Atlanta to meet my fellow CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service Officers. I have never felt so intimidated by my peers The best and the brightest, they were star clinicians, had served in disaster zones; MD/PhDs and MSF.

PEPFAR is the epitome of soft power. It is a Republican initiative, it is pro-life, pro-America and the most popular U.S. program in Africa. There’s even a waiver acknowledging this, yet I’m told that drugs are still being withheld at clinics in Africa. This must be reversed immediately!!
