If you have ever reported a colour-ringed Black-tailed Godwit, you have helped to establish connections that cross national and continental boundaries. Here's how the Wash links to other sites. Draw your local map using a ShinyApp: wadertales.wordpress.com/202… #ornithology

A day on the water with the Port of Cork 🌊 Follow along as we set out across Cork Harbour to monitor three floating pontoons that serve as vital breeding habitats for Common Terns – a protected seabird species in Ireland. From nest checks to chick counts and ringing, every step helps us better understand and protect these incredible birds. 🐣💍 Thank you to everyone who was involved in supporting biodiversity in the harbour.💚 *Filmed under licence* #KeepingCorkConnected

Port of Cork’s Common Tern Breeding Project is in full swing! 🐣 Hatching began at the start of June, and during a recent bird-ringing event on 26th June, our team counted over 100 chicks across the three pontoons. Each chick was fitted with a unique PVC identification ring. Bird ringing helps ornithologists understand and track migratory routes, stop-over sites, and the survival rates of individual birds. With more than 15 active nests and eggs still to hatch on our Foaty Channel pontoon, we look forward to seeing even more chicks over the next two weeks. @BirdWatchIE @NPWSIreland

🌿 Supporting Biodiversity in Cork Harbour 🐦 Since 2017, the Port of Cork has been providing breeding habitat for Common Terns to nest successfully in Cork Harbour. This summer, three pontoons have been deployed within Foaty Channel and the Ringaskiddy Basin, and we’re already seeing over 50 nests! 👋 Meet Zoe and Tim, our UCC summer interns, who are helping monitor Tern activity on site as part of this important project. Tern activity is also being observed via remote cameras installed on the pontoons, allowing for continuous monitoring, with the hope that 2025 brings another successful breeding season. 🎥 Check out some footage from the pontoons #PortOfCork #KeepingCorkConnected #CorkHarbour #WildlifeConservation #CommonTerns #Biodiversity #Sustainability

Common Tern Update! Last year 53 nesting pairs of Common Terns were observed on the Ringaskiddy Pontoons. Notably, Tern Red 744 was sighted in Gambia in October 2024, after also being spotted there in 2023. This bird was ringed as a chick in Ringaskiddy during the summer of 2023. This initiative remains an important step in promoting local biodiversity and protecting our natural heritage. 📸 Tadhg O’Keeffe

Did you know? The Port of Cork introduced purpose-built pontoons in Cork Harbour to provide a protected breeding site for the Common Tern, an amber listed migratory seabird 🪺 The pontoon comes with anti-predator measures and has been a very valuable addition to support local bird diversity #KeepCorkConnected
