Looking forward to this. The book is great....an adventure story set in and around Guernsey.
We are delighted that Sean McManus will be joining us in the bookshop on Saturday to chat and sign copies of his new novel, Teeth of the Conger - not to be missed!

That was not the case at the secondary school you attended....
In the 1950s when I'm struggling now to think what the school leaving age was but it was possibly 14? But back then the main role was the 3 Rs. Everything else other than academic and games such as sex education, political indoctrination etc was left to the parent

But no change until 2027....so the GST proposals could replace the income tax in 27!

Because we know that if we "downsize" we can provide accommodation ready for those families looking for bigger houses. Why keep rooms empty?

However, maybe a simple short term intervention will give time to discuss other long term solutions
Guernsey's fiscal problems began with Zero-10, and they won't be solved until the States have the guts to address the root cause of the issue. Inflicting more pain on the middle class will not solve the problem; it will only drive away more young people who see no future here.

I agree brilliant interview and the first one, so refreshing to hear about a positive attitude towards prisoners. I so hope what she was trying to achieve is maintained. But so sad to hear of her ( feeling of?) lack of support.
Replying to @Jessdunsdon
An excellent interview Jess, be interesting to see if the processes Susie brought are still in situ!

However it gives the time to consider alternatives whilst getting some extra income to deal with the issues identified by the last few P and R committees.
Deputy Trott as an experienced States member will be fully aware he and the current States cannot tie the next States down to a temporary 22% income tax rise for two years. A Requete or States Report could be before the new States in July 2025, less than a year to revert to 20%

Have to say, it seems ( on first consideration) a sensible move.....hopefully the tax office can cope ....should just be a tweak to the computer programme....
The personal rate of income tax will increase by 2% as a temporary measure for two years, under proposals for the 2025 Budget. However, P&R is also proposing several measures to protect and support lower and middle earners. Read more at gov.gg/budget-2025-proposals

Sadly, the current plan will be really expensive and I'm worried that might mean that the added investment needed...particularly in providing sufficient support to staff to help those pupils at both ends of the academic spectrum......Will not be forthcoming.
If the Review had been completed it would have been clear the 11-18 2SM was the best option educationally & financially. CfESC came to realise that but didn't want to alienate those islanders who opposed the model. So the Committee proposed abandoning the Review.

Guernsey Lit fest???
So, saw @Peston at @labour conference and had to buy his book. Hoping he can come over to Guernsey to impart his journalistic wisdom sometime soon.

Apartments are a possibility....but not if they're above ground floor with no lift access. To future proof for older people ( of which I count myself as one) lift access is essential.

Or possibly, having watched the Tories constantly denigrate them for, amongst other things, achieving nothing whilst in opposition ( strange that...???) they are reflecting back Tory behaviour

Strange, so far there’s been few speeches statements policies etc which haven’t mentioned the Tories. Playground antics are neither big nor clever. Similar to a divorcee out with a new partner continually banging on about their ex. Obviously nothing interesting to say or offer.

Hope you'll be coming to Guernsey on your next tour!
15 Sep 2024
There are a few tickets left for this afternoon if you fancy an afternoon of wordy fun. I’ve come to the penultimate show of this tour: thank you to all of you who’ve joined me over the past few years. Now I just need to write a new one..

Maybe because teachers are so constrained by being told what they must do and when that they are not allowed the time to be real educators.
I can absolutely see the benefit of teaching languages but @deputyrobward is right - there are other priorities. Why do we not see more demands for teaching kids valuable skills they will use in their lives and careers, such as how to handle social media and other digital skills?

It's an amazingly beautiful place alongside the Shannon. Well worth a visit

That looks like Paul Jones in front of you.....
A school friend sent me this today. I do not know: *Where I am… *How old I am… *Who half these people are… *Why the boys are wearing shirts… *Am I even enjoying myself? All a mystery! I do however know the dress is from warehouse 😂 The joy of going out in the 90s

Haven't been following this thread....but which problem are you trying to solve?
Accepting for a moment that that is the case, what's the solution if reducing numbers isn't?
