This is the best data I've seen on the subject and unfortunately it's over 20 years old. Zagorsky 2007 (data is 2004)

Heroin indeed unambiguously benefits heroin users. Yes, heroin can cause addiction, but the revealed preference of heroin users is to have heroin, not freedom from addiction. You can voluntarily stop using heroin. (Both heroin & rent control create local optima)
Rent control is indeed unambiguously benefits tenants in rent controlled units. Yes, units can fall into disrepair but the revealed preference of those stabilized tenants is to have cheap rent not a nicer place. You can voluntarily leave a rent controlled unit. (1/2)

If you bought your phone, you should own it. Google's new 'developer verification' means they decide what software you're allowed to run on your own property. Join the 100k signers opposing this: keepandroidopen.org #KeepAndroidOpen

What do you pick if you get to push the button for your own kid?
I see a lot of people saying that the blue button is collectivist nonsense. But if you press red, your kid dies. You're safe, though. You got that calculated out right.

You are alone in a room. You are free to leave and go home. In 1 minute, the room will be filled with toxic gas and you'll die. However if a majority of people in this situation stay, there will be no toxic gas. Do you remain in the room or leave?
Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

People like this are more evil than any rapist or murderer. The self-righteousness coupled with the anti-civilizational viewpoint is beyond disgusting. Imagine calling for people to make it easier to victimize them to protect criminals. This is the pinnacle of evil.
This post is an excellent litmus test for understanding of just war theory. Despite the fact that I can see how effective this would be, I must oppose it because the damage it would do to my enemy (who bashes in my mailbox) would far outweigh the good of saving my mailbox. Its disproportionality is opposed by our duty in charity (and even justice) to watch out even for the good of our enemies. (Yes, by the way, I have had my mailbox bashed in by random vandals.)

"Men are still socialized, by and large, for a world that no longer exists. They're not taught domestic skills and emotional intelligence the way women are." This is the dumbest thing I've read lately, and I've been seeing a lot of flat earther nonsense.

A general shithead registry would be better. Most murderers have a long history of burglary, assault, DUIs, larceny, etc before they eventually kill someone.
Murder registry is a good idea from Elon. People should know if they are close to a murderer so proper precautions can be taken.

It took centuries of toil and sacrifice to reach the apex of human civilization that is America. The crux of the Democrat agenda is to resettle the masses of the world on our shores and redistribute the wealth and resources our civilization has produced until nothing is left.

We either end birthright citizenship and enact mass deportations or our American sons and daughters will grow up to be slaves of foreigners in their own country. Those are the stakes.

People online do this weird thing where they imagine all of the opinions they see are coming from the same person and then mock the hypocrisy of this fictional person.
“Instead of terraforming other planets, why don’t we terraform Earth instead?” *terraforming the Sahara is proposed* “No, that will disrupt the ecosystem!”

A lot of people are able to commit information to short term memory to pass exams without ever understanding the concepts. Almost no one even acknowledges this is a problem.
Replying to @ikirigin
Admitting that you studied economics and still think that rent control is a good idea is a real self-own. It's admitting that you're not merely ignorant, but ineducable.

Probably men are more likely to make a firm decision and then carry it out. Women are more likely to cut wrists or swallow random amounts of pills on a whim. There's also a much greater incentive for a man to want a suicide attempt to be successful.
Sabiam que mulheres tentam mais o suicídio do que homens? Só que homens têm mais sucesso nisso pq usam métodos mais violentos.

A depressed woman will recieve kindness and compassion and people go out of their way to help. A depressed man is treated as a nuisance and knows this. Surviving a suicide attempt would make this much worse.

If you put a degree in your username or profile, you should say what the degree is in, otherwise it doesn't communicate anything other than pretentiousness.

Some people just answer randomly on surveys and some deliberately pick weird answers because they think it's funny. Every survey ever has ~5% of people saying the most ridiculous thing and then everyone is baffled by how 5% of people can think that.

Why are there threads with a bunch of comments saying the same thing? Why do people do this? Surely when you're about to reply to a post, you notice there are already several replies saying what you were going to say, right?
Why didn’t the machines in the Matrix just use nuclear energy ? It seems way too over complicated to build giant farms to harvest “energy” from humans while maintaining a giant virtual reality world that they’ve already rebelled against half a dozen times or something.
