Owning a ยฃ400,000 house with a ยฃ350,000 mortgage in the UK in 2026 means signing a 25-year contract to give the bank around ยฃ2,050 a month, in exchange for the right to maintain a building you'll spend another ยฃ4,000 a year keeping dry, warm and structurally sound. At a 5% fixed rate, the total interest over the life of the mortgage is around ยฃ264,000. The total mortgage cost ends up at roughly ยฃ614,000. The price tag on the front door says ยฃ400K. The actual cost of living in it for 25 years is closer to ยฃ750K, before council tax, repairs, insurance and the new boiler. This is what the country has been calling 'getting on the ladder.'

Indian worker Vipin Kumar has been awarded honorary citizenship by the city of Craiova, Romania, after he jumped into an icy lake and saved the life of a 5-year-old girl. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ด For nearly 30 minutes, he held the child above freezing water until rescuers arrived. This is the side of Indians the world rarely sees in headlines: courage, sacrifice, compassion and humanity. Yet stories like this seldom receive the attention that anti-India narratives do. No coverage from Western media outlets. As India's envoy noted, Vipin's actions embodied the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam "The World is One Family." โค๏ธ

How do you challenge a motor insurer in an accident where they try to pin the blame on you despite there being third party witness statements in your favour?

Private school parents are subsidising the state system by not using it but still paying for it anyway. So sheโ€™s lying.

The 'subsidy' line is disingenuous - it implies parents owe the Govt money for daring to exercise a choice other than the state system (which they still pay for) and therefore not taxing this previously was an act of largesse. Labour's education tax is spite dressed up as policy.

Still so angry about Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, actively bullying schoolchildren. It's beyond appalling. If anyone dared to say anything about the choices she made for her kids' education, she would screech bullying and harassment.

To anyone still defending #SchoolFeeVAT - this โฌ‡๏ธ is what youโ€™re advocating for: a vulnerable child forced into provision that fails them, & parents pushed to the brink to give their child what they need, while the state taxes them for doing so. Maggie - you have my full respect.
This is so true. My son was told he was โ€œtoo brightโ€ for specialist provision. He ended up going to a mainstream state school and was put in Set 3 out of 4. We had to sell our house to pay for private school fees - heโ€™s now in set one in a lovely SEN friendly private school.

I've known many British Indians since coming here, and not one of them is Indian first and British second. The first dinner I was invited to - by a colleague who became a close friend, in a house that smelled of cumin and turmeric and sandalwood, his mother cooking in the kitchen, deep-fried starters filling the air - was a classic English roast. That's just to give you the flavour of it. British Indians are part of the fabric of this society because they are British. More British than you, frankly. You're alone. Your race and minority victimisation shtick, your entire positioning, your entire account, your politics - it represents absolutely no one. You're a neo-Marxist grifter who happens to be a person of colour. Don't pretend you're the voice of British Indians. You aren't. They already have their own voices, and they sound nothing like yours.
The British ruled India for 2 centuries and made its people British Citizens. If any culture was invaded it was theirs not ours. Of course we have the descendants of British Indians in the UK. They have every right to be here. It has absolutely nothing to do with Vance.

I attended a school on a government assisted place in 1990. My family couldnโ€™t have afforded it otherwise. That scheme was abolished in 1997. Now weโ€™re taxing what remains. Britain keeps removing the ladders and wondering why social mobility is broken

Hey @bphillipsonMP time for you to pay your debt to society and stop blaming others who donโ€™t even use all of it.
Private school parents pay for the private sector (their own kids and bursary/scholarship kids) and the state sector plus VAT. State school parents take from the state sector. Bridget Phillipson doesnโ€™t even cover the cost of her own kids. Perhaps she should pay her fair share.

Hey @bphillipsonMP I invite to stop this divisive messaging and come and visit the independent schools in Cardiff. Thereโ€™s a lovely all girls school that would give you an insight into what goes on day to day. And guess what, with children no different to the 93% you constantly bang on about, only youโ€™ve sold them as the enemy to Joe bloggs. I dare you to accept my challenge and use it as an opportunity to learn rather than demonize! ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผ

JD Vance's wife, Usha Bala Chilukuri Vance, is Indian American. Her parents immigrated to the United States from Andhra Pradesh, India, in the late 1980s. Vickrum Digwa's parents came to the UK from India in the mid-1990s. By JD Vance's logic, his in-laws, Radhakrishna Chilukuri and Lakshmi Chilukuri, would be part of the "mass invasion of migrants" because they immigrated around the same time as Henry's killer.
