Reflecting on Two Decades of Change in Research I became a @RoySocChem member in 2004, when Chemistry World was first launched. To mark @ChemistryWorld 20th anniversary, Phillip Broadwith asked 20 of us to look back at the last two decades of our careers in chemistry. Some interesting perspectives on the past period emerges from these 20 interviews. "I think, as older academicians, sometimes we need to remember what that was like; that we, too, were students and young academics once. And at the same time, it’s important for students to realize that the professors were also once students like them – it’s like a mirror." This was a great article to work on - I had some absolutely fascinating conversations about the breadth of chemical endeavour, the evolution of various sectors over time, and the challenges ahead for the future. Hoping the next 10 will be equally interesting and inspirational
It's been 20 years since Chemistry World first went into print. How has the world of chemistry changed in that time? @broadwithp asked chemists who became members of @RoySocChem in 2004 to look back at the last two decades of their careers! chemistryworld.com/20-years-…

Check out some February highlights from the past 20 years with @broadwithp! 2023's cover was inspired by Joseph Wright of Derby's painting The Alchemist Discovering Phosphorus, and 2006's was about high-temperature superconductors – a technology still very much in the news now.

I am privileged that BM, a #chemistry PhD student who was intentionally poisoned with thallium, trusted me to tell his story. For over a decade, he has fought to regain the abilities he had before the poisoning. The story just published in @cenmag 1/5 cen.acs.org/safety/lab-safet…

Replying to @bbctms
@bbctms @GarethSouthgate As a youngster I filled in in a few @Nidderdale1894 league games for Kirklington (now sadly defunct). My fave ground was @CrakehallCC - a tiny spot with trees hanging over the square & the churchyard about 10yd away on the other goo.gl/maps/nvLJSqCqg9UxNas1…

If I recall, local rules were that there were no sixes to any part of the ground, and if the ball hit the trees at any point, it was four (but it's a long time ago and I may be wrong...)

Why are purple skittles grape flavour in North America, but Blackcurrant in the UK? This question from Canadian colleague @AdaMcVean buzzed up a memory about how blackcurrant syrup was doled out to kids in the UK under rationing during and post-WW2 as a vitamin C supplement

So, in the 1900s, huge fields of blackcurrants, gooseberries and other Ribes were sprayed or grubbed up to save the white pine. In Europe, white pine was not economically important, but blackcurrants were, so they put up with the fungus to save the currants

Bit of fun. ‘The Man from the Future’ has earned out its (not huge!) advance in the US. To celebrate, I’ll stick anyone who RTs this into a lottery for a paperback copy. Every 50 RTs, I’ll give away another book till they’re gone. All RTs stay in for subsequent rounds. T&Cs… 1/
