Today I bring bad news. The Supreme Court of Canada dismissed my application for leave to hear the case. The anti-SLAPP application I filed on October 16th, 2020 was ultimately unsuccessful at all levels of court in Canada.

new from me: RCMP got cell site simulator technology in 2005 but while the devices are still being used in the lower mainland by the force, they still have no finalized policy on their use

“If you aren’t comfortable being adversarial with the state I suggest that you reconsider what democracy means in practice. There is no one that is not an activist in a democracy. There is no civility to civil society.”
👏👏👏
In 2017, Global Affairs responded to an ATIP I filed regarding 20-year old records. Given huge redactions, I filed a complaint with the Information Commish. Today - 5 years later - I heard back for first time asking if I was still interested. Access-to-info in Canada is broken.
As someone who works in Canada’s Internet advocacy space and was a student of @taylor_owen, I have to say that the claim made by Kevin Chan in this article — that Taylor hates the Internet — is false, made in bad faith, and isn’t productive.

📣 TOMORROW is the Day of Action to stop website blocking! RT to spread the word!
The govt's website blocking plan could put the onus on every online platform/provider for alleged copyright violations — forcing ISPs to unplug users to save their own skin. dontblock.ca
The board had no discussion about the topic and - though @VancouverPD has said they’re not using this tech any more - @OpenMediaOrg says there is nothing stopping them from doing so once again. #vanpoli#cdnpoli
“...This creates the risk of significant harm to individuals, the vast majority of whom have never been and will never be implicated in a crime.” 2 weeks ago, @OpenMediaOrg asked @VanPoliceBoard to amend @VancouverPD policies to outlaw facial recognition tech like #clearviewAI.

When they write the history of this era, one of the strangest chapters will be devoted to Uber, a company that was never, ever going to be profitable, which existed solely to launder billions for the Saudi royals.

Today is #GivingTuesday .
You're going to see a lot of asks from organizations looking for your support.
Don't ignore them. We need your help. 🧵
You did your online shopping.
Now support the world you want to live in.
And like the workers, we need to organize around our collective rights to fight back against an existing systemic power imbalance.
My Grandpa knew this in 1986.
I might not be able to build a house like he could, but I can learn from his example.
If we’re going to get digital rights in Canada, we’re going to need work together. We’re going to need to organize.
We can’t win this fight as individuals.
