Canada's biggest attempt to regulate social media and AI services is here, complete with mandated age verification for millions, a powerful new regulator to oversee it all, and many unresolved questions. My post takes stock of Bill C-34's first week. michaelgeist.ca/2026/06/taki…

Thanks to @RobBreakenridge for inviting me on his show to discuss Bill C-34, including the social media ban and AI chatbot regulation. We close with some reflections on antisemitism in Canada and the recent Carney speech. youtube.com/watch?v=E1HBzJxT…

“Proponents of a ban have been offering ‘false hope’ to parents, Burrows argued. ‘I’m looking at all the evidence, the sector is looking at all the evidence, and we just don't see what lessons we can learn from Australia.’” x.com/BBCNews/status/2065736…

It looks like a whole new Canadian federal privacy law will be tabled in the House of Commons on Monday. Very interesting that it appears to have a completely different structure than the last attempt at privacy law reform. ourcommons.ca/documentviewer…

The government heavily promoted the idea that the Bill C-34 social media ban could be temporary, with the possibility of exemptions for services that meet certain standards. My post on why the timeline from officials suggests the exemption is an illusion. x.com/mgeist/status/20654209…
Tens of millions of Canadians will be required to age verify to use social media when the ban launches. My post on how the government plans to implement it without standards, privacy review, or an enforcement mechanism with potential exemptions years away. michaelgeist.ca/2026/06/the-…

Culture Minister @MarcMillerVM initially said Bill C-34 social media ban would take effect immediately. Officials now say it will happen before addressing standards and privacy as contemplated by the law. Millions required to age verify without safeguards. x.com/mgeist/status/20654209…

This must be the most bizarre and troubling comment during the entire lawful access debate. A Liberal MP says Bill C-22 “ has nothing to do with the privacy of people and their information.” Inconceivable given the committee hearings and concerns raised. michaelgeist.ca/2026/06/libe…

Government officials say they plan to start the Bill C-34 kids’ social media ban soon after the bill passes. But their plan would sideline standards for age verification and a mandated privacy review just as millions are required to verify their age. x.com/mgeist/status/20654209…

It is simply not credible to have sat through Bill C-22 committee hearings where numerous experts expressed concerns about the privacy implications of metadata retention and weakening encryption and say the bill has nothing to do with privacy. Rock bottom. x.com/jacobmantle/status/206…

🚨BREAKING!!!🚨 After repeatedly denying Conservative efforts to invite the Privacy Commissioner to testify about his recommendations on Bill C-22, the Liberals now say the bill “has nothing to do with the privacy of people and their personal information.” 🤯

"The bill will make privacy a fundamental right"* *offer void where it involves political parties
NEW: AI Minister Evan Solomon is expected to table legislation next week to modernize Canada’s privacy laws. The bill will make privacy a fundamental right, protect children and curb misuse of personal information, including for surveillance pricing.

I was asked earlier today whether I thought Bill C-34 would achieve its objective. My answer was that I have no idea because most important decisions and measures are kicked down the road. Check out Michael's table.
The government’s digital safety bill regulates social media services, AI chatbots, and potentially any other online service or application. Who is targeted? What criteria for regulation? Bill C-34 doesn't say. It leaves all of those decisions to cabinet. x.com/mgeist/status/20650589…
