I think Elon Musk should be expelled from the British Royal Society. Not because he peddles conspiracy theories and makes Nazi salutes, but because of the huge damage he is doing to scientific institutions in the US. Now let's see if he really believes in free speech.

Thx to @rishibansalMD for flagging this slide deck on the economic impacts of NIH funding. tinyurl.com/2s4xdmh5 . US $ growth reflects bipartisan support for sustaining health research. CIHR has fallen far behind while ISED steers massive tranches of health research $. 🆘

From @jaimewatt, a clarion call for action on productivity. Are there points I'd argue or add to the agenda? Sure. But we urgently need *reasoned* action-focused debate on boosting productivity. Instead, we have rhetoric/policies that distract & delay or pander & polarize.

It’s not hyperbolic to say we are in a national productivity emergency. Nor is it to assert Canada’s leaders need to start using new tools to address it. Read my opinion on why a wartime effort is needed to solve our nation’s productivity challenge and face down Donald Trump. thestar.com/opinion/contribu…

Calls for a public health workforce strategy go back to the 1990s if not earlier. No coordinated plan developed or implemented - and now, unsurprisingly, we have a major HR challenge on our hands after an unprecedented pandemic.
Replying to @twpiggott
Nearly 80% of public health staff experienced burnout and nearly 1 in 2 experienced harassment as a result of their public health work. bmcpublichealth.biomedcentra…

We need a strong public health workforce. Not only because this is not the 1st & won't be last pandemic of my life, but also for other significant public health crises we're facing: opioids crisis, climate change, lack of prevention & healthcare crisis. x.com/twpiggott/status/14939…

I’ve lived through SARS in 2003, we quickly forgot. I’ve lived through H5N1 in 2005 & since, we quickly forgot. I’ve lived through H1N1 in 2009, we quickly forgot. I’ve lived through MERS in 2012, we quickly forgot. I’ve lived through Ebola in 2014, we quickly forgot.

Note: The UK broke up its ISED kluge equivalent in February and now has a Dept of Science, Innovation & Technology. Follows other G7 nations in separating elements of RDI from Industry/Commerce while still pursuing systematic industrial strategies. Just sayin'... 2/2

The Fall Economic Update didn't address pressing concerns of research trainees & early career researchers. Definitely a disappointment but granular research-specific issues seldom feature in FEUs. Rx: Relentlessness. Keep connecting & advocating focused on Budget 2024.
