“Franks’ engaging, vivid and energetic narrative of Howard is told through the cases of those [he hanged].” A new review of “An Uncommon Hangman”. Thank you Dr Victoria Nagy for such a generous review, and capturing perfectly what I aimed for in telling Nosey Bob’s story.

Step into the world of intrigue and suspense during Sydney Rare Book Week when the SMSA showcases a collection of first edition murder mystery books. With over 13,000 mystery and crime novels in the SMSA Library collection, you could say we are a little obsessed with the genre, and we are so excited to share the iconic and unusual titles that have shaped the genre for generations. Whether you’re a seasoned sleuth or new to the genre, join us on Monday 21 October from 4pm to take a glimpse into the golden age of crime fiction. 👉SPECIAL GUEST We are thrilled to announce that Rachel Franks will be joining us to officially open the exhibition! Rachel is the Coordinator of Scholarship at the State Library of New South Wales and holds doctorates in both Australian Crime Fiction (Central Queensland University) and True Crime Texts (University of Sydney). If that weren’t impressive enough, Rachel is also an award-winning writer. Her research is published across a range of books, journals and magazines. She is the author of An Uncommon Hangman: The Life and Deaths of Robert ‘Nosey Bob’ Howard (2022). Find out more: tinyurl.com/bh4p8z9v #RareBookWeek #SydneyRareBookWeek @statelibrarynsw @cfwriter

How it started, how it’s going … Today is the anniversary of running away from home. I miss seeing the sky. And yes, I often think suffocating and not feeling was better than starting my life over; but I’m learning to breathe again. Thank you to everyone who has stood by me.

I take my role as Coordinator, Scholarship very seriously. When one of my Fellows is giving a talk on the Ibis, I know what to do. (And vintage cuff links from an estate of someone who shared my initials.)

Happy 85th birthday Lily Tomlin. My first memory of Lily was watching her singing and signing "Sing” on @sesamestreet. I still associate this song with @LilyTomlin more than anyone else.

A friend of a friend - let’s refer to him as A Retired Gentleman - sent me some of the ties he doesn’t wear anymore. He has cleared some storage space, I’ve enhanced my collection I made a couple of donations to women’s refuges to say “thank you”; so it’s worked out well. 👔
