PAKISTAN: Fareedullah Afridi, a member of the civil rights movement Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), was abducted on the evening of 18 May 2026 from Peshawar city, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The police have refused to file any First Information Report nor conducted any investigation into his disappearance despite requests from the family. Fareedullah Afridi, is not the first PTM activist to be abducted without a trace. Amnesty International is concerned that Fareedullah’s disappearance fits into a worrying pattern of enforced disappearance of PTM activists and crackdown by state authorities. Pakistani authorities must urgently carry out an effective, independent and transparent investigation into Afridi’s abduction. If he is in custody of the authorities, his whereabouts should be disclosed, he must be released immediately, and those responsible for his disappearance be held accountable in line with international human rights standards. #EndEnforcedDisappearances

In the Halimzai Nasapai area of Mohmand District, three unidentified individuals in plain clothes were present on a mountain. An ordinary Pashtun civilian, concerned for the safety of his area, asked them who they were. It was his right to ask. It is the right of every person who wants to protect their home, their land and their children. But what was the response? First the police arrived, then the FC (Frontier Corps) reached the area and instead of dialogue, bullets were fired, violence took place and an attempt was made to punish the entire village. They demanded that the person who dared to ask questions be handed over. What kind of justice is this? If officials come in plain clothes and do not identify themselves, how are ordinary people supposed to know who is a protector and who is a threat? And if the public asks questions, is the answer to be bullets and violence? This is not just the issue of one village; it is the issue of the entire Pashtun regions. This is the same policy in which civilians are treated as suspects, while the state considers itself beyond accountability. We state clearly: In Pashtun areas, this “terror hidden behind the Pakistani army uniform” will no longer be tolerated. #StopPashtunGenocide
