The Art of Afghan Trucks
These images are taken from a book first published in London in 1976, dedicated to the unique art of Afghan truck painting and decoration.
The tradition of decorating Afghan trucks has its roots in the cultural heritage of ancient caravan routes. In earlier times, caravan camels were adorned with various patterns and symbols representing protection, pride, spirituality, and storytelling. Over time, this tradition was carried forward onto modern trucks.
These photographs capture many aspects of Afghanistan’s social and cultural life during that era. On one of the trucks, the following slogan can be seen:
“Long live Mohammad Daoud, President of the State of Afghanistan!”
We are sharing a selection of historical images from this book. Do any of these bring back memories for you?
