Across the world, women and girls are facing the consequences of rising conflicts, democratic backsliding, economic pressures, shrinking civic space, and organized pushback against longstanding commitments on women’s rights, which are converging to erode the foundations of gender equality. These fractures continue to shape institutions and public life, determining whose rights are upheld, whose voices are heard, and whose safety is protected. Justice systems reflect these power dynamics. Discriminatory laws endure, impunity is tolerated, and the promise of equality under the law is unevenly realized. Across contexts, justice systems are among the first arenas where retreat from gender equality becomes visible. At the same time, justice systems are central to safeguard hard-won gains on gender equality, especially as one in four countries report backlash hampering implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action. Access to justice is a transformative force in the lives of women and girls, to advance equality and non-discrimination, protect against violence and abuse, and strengthen trust in institutions. Justice systems that work for women girls help build more inclusive governance, support peace and social cohesion, and prevent future violations. At a time when multilateral institutions are under strain and progress on gender equality is being hollowed out, this is an opportunity to champion commitments to global normative frameworks on women’s rights, including the Beijing Platform for Action, reinforce accountability, and support concrete national action that ensures justice systems respond to the lived realities of women and girls. The 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women follows a pivotal year for women’s and girls’ rights and marks the first full session of the Commission since the adoption of the resolution on its revitalization. This week, governments, civil society, UN agencies and experts across the region will come at the Asia-Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting in 🇹🇭, ahead of the #CSW70, 9–19 March 2026. @UN_Women🇨🇳hosted a dedicated session on gender equality as part of the UN in China’s flagship programme for senior officials. We shared key concepts, our triple mandate which includes our role in driving UN system accountability on #GEWE our impact in China and across the region.
In partnership with China’s 🇨🇳Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the China Diplomatic Academy, the UN🇺🇳 in China completed a two-week immersive programme for distinguished Chinese professionals from the public sector, academia, and senior management about the United Nations the broader multilateral system. This cohort engaged actively with the UN Country Team, as well as regional and global 🌎 colleagues, exploring core elements of the multilateral system—including the 2030 Agenda, the Pact for the Future, and the UN80 Initiative—amid today’s complex global challenges. The season’s first snow ❄️, falling as the programme concluded, symbolized a solid and transformative partnership. We value the trust of the Host Government 🇨🇳 and, through policy dialogue, area-based programmes, and South-South cooperation, we advance together toward the 🇺🇳 Sustainable Development Goals. We look forward to continued collaboration with China, leveraging its expertise and resources to forge an inclusive and prosperous future for all. 🇺🇳🤝🇨🇳 #SDG17 #UNFitForPurpose #DeliveringAsOne 🇺🇳🇨🇳
