I also think people are thrown off by the term "zipper merge" like it is some kind of carefully orchestrated ballet that requires masterful execution and could only work in an ideal world. It's not. It's just normal driving. What is a two-, three-, or four-lane highway but a "zipper merge" that either hasn't zippered yet, or is always zippering and unzippering? In fact, normal highway driving is infinitely more complicated than a zipper merge. Yet I have to get in line with the rest of the lemmings because if I try to drive normally and rationally, some Road Justice Defender will put the life of my family in danger to keep the empty lane pure and undefiled.
