The Lion & Sun was Iran’s national symbol for centuries and appeared on Iran's flag long before the establishment of the Islamic Republic. During the latest nationwide uprising in January, it became the most recognizable symbol carried by protesters and supporters. This World Cup, FIFA classified the Lion & Sun as a political symbol and prohibited it inside stadiums. The response from Iranians was simple: they would make sure it remained visible.
