* Correct quote is “politically left” not socialist. Point stands. Entrepreneurs take potential and turn it into value that’s added to the global GDP. They capture a small amount of that value in the process which is a big part of the incentive. The rest goes to others, employees, shareholders, government, suppliers etc. You can always criticize them. You can always criticize the redistribution efforts. But you should always remember that without them, there is very little new value enters society and that locks everyone in zero sum competition, sometimes war. Entrepreneurs are load bearing for human thriving. It’s a glorious act to put yourself out there and build a company that provides good and services to everyone. And Elon is the best entrepreneur that ever was. You don’t have to like him, and sure he’s crazy, but otherwise he wouldn’t do crazy things. Same coin, two sides.

When did jealousy become a virtue and not a sin? Someone needs to head to the confessional

Given that you’re writing to FIFA re: the referee from Somalia being denied entry, @MayorOliviaChow, what is your take on his unambiguously antisemitic views? Is this representative of the #Toronto you want to build? Torontonians need to know in advance of October.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow says Omar Artan, the Somali referee who was denied entry to the U.S. ahead of the World Cup, would be welcome to officiate in Toronto. “Toronto believes in fairness, inclusion, and giving talent the opportunity to shine. He would be welcome to referee here in our city,” Chow said, adding she will write to FIFA to let them know he is welcome.

If you've adopted AI at your company but haven't seen any tangible results, read this 1990 article: "The Dynamo and the Computer" by Paul David. When electricity first arrived, factories that "adopted" it barely got faster. They just swapped the steam engine for an electric one and ran everything else exactly as before: same machine layout, same workflow, same management. Electricity in, no real gains out. The most common mistake with any new technology is to drop it into the old organization and then declare the transformation done. The real leap came decades later, when each machine got its own small motor. Suddenly machines no longer had to be lined up around one central drive shaft. They could be rearranged around the actual flow of work. The productivity gains didn't come from electricity. They came from REDESIGNING THE ENTIRE FACTORY around it. AI is the same. Bolting it onto your existing process gets you a faster steam engine. The payoff comes when you redesign the work itself. (link to paper in comments)

The more I read this, the angrier I get. Canada has a genuine opportunity to lead in AI, but opening the national strategy with claims of “considerable evidence” of harms—without citing a single source—sets the tone for the rest of this weak document. Bottom line: There is considerable evidence that the Canadian government needs to scrap this strategy and consult actual experts to build one that truly helps all Canadians
Some corners of the federal government continue to operate like a parody of Trudeau era wokeism. @EvanLSolomon, if incoherent identify politics like this👇 is what’s steering Canada’s AI policy, you will be responsible for leaving Canada behind in the most important economic transformation since the Industrial Revolution.

Opus 4.8 is driving me nuts. Loves to major in minor things and waste time or debating stuff that doesn't matter while it makes up wrong information. Backwards from 4.7 from my perspective. Just venting. Carry on folks.

Under capitalism, socialists are free to build socialism. Under socialism, capitalists aren’t free to build anything. Nothing stops a group of socialists pooling their money, forming a company, and splitting every wage and every pound of profit perfectly equally.... Or to donate all profit to the government. It’s legal. It’s easy. Owning the means of production is as simple as setting up a company. Marx wrote his manifesto before the invention of limited liability companies. Back then “seize the factory” meant seizing it from the handful of families who could afford one. That argument expired the day anyone could start a company with limited liability, raise investment and hire who they want. Socialists are free to lead by example and demonstrate their system works. They can out-recruit, out-motivate, out-build and out innovate based on their ideas if they like. It would prove the philosophy works. Capitalism will happily host their experiment. The fact that nobody does this tells you a lot.
I will soon be introducing a bill to give the public a 50% ownership stake in the largest AI companies in America. This would guarantee that the trillions created by AI are used to improve the lives of all of us — and block oligarch decisions that harm the American people.

Opus 4.8 has way stronger opinions than 4.7 - and can be incredibly confidently very very wrong. Not sure I like this new strong option

This bingo card is all too Real. Let’s see.
In anticipation of @MarkJCarney speaking about #antisemitism tonight at Holy Blossom, I've prepared this bingo card. And no, it's not to make light of the antisemitism pandemic we have in this country, it's because our PM recognized a Palestinian State while there were still Israeli hostages held in Gaza tunnels by Hamas, so I have terribly low expectations of what this speech is going to accomplish. Action speaks louder than words, and his actions so far would necessitate a great deal of impactful words tonight (leading to significant action) to mean anything at all. @kinsellawarren @terrynewman

As someone who knows a thing or two about a spurious allegation against them being memory-holed, this is incredibly cowardly.
The only thing worse than a false claim (causing church burnings, lost livelihoods, sectarian conflict) is quietly removing said claim without correction & accountability. @Laurier has memory-holed their false statement. It must be restored along with a correction.
