Our fossil fools picket in New Plymouth today was a great success. We visited four companies involved with oil, gas and coal mining: @Omv, Todd Energy, @BeachEnergyLtd and @ANZAotearoa bank which invests in Bathurst Resources coal mining on the Denniston Plateau near Westport.

So @teradar you're obsessed w these huge snails. Did you know they've been living in a fridge in Reefton for 17 years b/c their only known habitat, Mt Augustus, was removed by the Stockton coal mine. Nowhere else they can live. One of our most endangered species. In a fridge

The climbers on the coal rig respond to Shane Jones' ridiculous claims. But, again, thanks for keeping the media coverage going @mangonui08: it's exactly what the protest needed b/c news of the Pope's death had taken over completely - until you came along! Nice work.
Replying to @mangonui08
Here's a reply to your video about us Minister @mangonui08. We all deserve safe, stable jobs that our communities can rely on for decades to come. Yet your government has left workers in the lurch by slashing programs like jobs for nature and health and education programs.

Rest in Peace Pope Francis. “Climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political and for the distribution of goods. It represents one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day.”

As we're about to raise our speed limits, turns out the UK car insurance premiums dropped by 16% last year, at least in part due to lower speed limits leading to fewer accidents. gbnews.com/lifestyle/cars/la…

An incredibly well-timed paper on "hydroclimate whiplash" - documenting wet seasons with climate-fuelled increased rain intensity leading to massive vegetation growth, followed by a prolonged drought = wildfire fuel. California a perfect example #LAfires nature.com/articles/s43017-0…

This is my old flatmate from back in the day, who has lived in Britain for many years, responding to our government's intention to remove the wellbeing provisions from the Local Government Act.

That Cook Strait ferries announcement would have to be the most oversold and underdelivered politics of a wobbly old political year. No costs No ferries, or designs, or actual likely models, sizes, deals Just a new agency, new (old minister) & target date of 2029 - five years

Rod Carr: “There’s not a tree we can now plant that is going to help meet our [2030 Paris target] in New Zealand this decade. If it’s not in the ground now, we’re down to gross emissions reduction or offshore cooperation. That’s it. The window’s closed on tree-planting.”

The plan has just one policy in the transport space - the Government's target of 10,000 EV chargers. This policy will reduce annual transport emissions by 0.016%.
New: The Government’s new climate plan relies on unproven methane-busting technology and partially disproven carbon capture schemes for as much as half of its promised greenhouse emissions reductions. newsroom.co.nz/2024/12/11/go…

Aotearoa adopting carbon capture & storage is an absolute joke. It doesn’t work; costs astronomical. Check @KetanJ0’s annual global CCS assesment (it’s not going well). But this govt? CCS, trees: anything to keep pumping out fossil fuel emissions. #nzpol ketanjoshi.co/2024/11/24/202…

What does NZ do now, if carbon sinks are no longer working? Our house of cards collapses? It’s pretty much all we’ve got in terms of mitigation. So so stupid theguardian.com/environment/…?

This is an outright lie
We inherited a significant backlog of road maintenance across New Zealand. We’re delivering a 124% increase in rehabilitation work on our roads this summer compared to last year.
