ok, I have to be fair - tonight's crew at @comcastcares did walk me thru quite a few very useful debugging steps and we have determined it might be my 20yr old filter/splitter! ordered a new one and will find out tomorrow

If you are a developer, you should never know about tracing libraries unless you want to add custom data. Traces should come from the environment automatically as much as possible, and you should have an opportunity to participate into that. Participation requires what's above.
