The White House just launched a National Initiative for American Space Nuclear Power: and it's a major step toward permanent human presence on the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
Today (April 14, 2026), the Office of Science and Technology Policy released new guidance to federal agencies, fulfilling President Trump’s Executive Order on Ensuring American Space Superiority. The initiative fast-tracks safe, reliable nuclear systems for sustained electricity, heating, and high efficiency propulsion in space. All capabilities solar power alone can’t deliver for long duration, high latitude, or deep space missions.
Nuclear has powered dozens of NASA probes and rovers since 1957; this puts it front and center for manned bases and exploration.
A clear signal: America is treating space as the next strategic frontier and backing it with the only energy source that actually works there.
Progress (and nuclear powered spacefaring) marches on. ⚛️🌕🚀
Today, we are releasing new guidance to Federal agencies for establishing a National Initiative for American Space Nuclear Power, as called for by President Trump’s EO on Ensuring American Space Superiority.
Nuclear power in space will give us the sustained electricity, heating, and propulsion essential to a permanent presence on the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
