"Our atmosphere thankfully protects us from small, daily #asteroid impacts. That's exactly what we don't want to happen today as @NASA soon brings home ancient asteroid samples to land safely, and pristinely, to be studied for decades to come," says Marco Micheli, Astronomer in ESA's Near-Earth Object Coordination Centre #NEOCC who made the observations.

Tomorrow, @NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft will drop off a sample from ancient asteroid #Bennu.
๐ญHere is the first image of OSIRIS-REx when it was 4.66 million km from Earth on 16 September as seen by ESAโs Optical Ground Station telescope in Tenerife.

ALT A small, slightly fuzzy black speck is in the centre of a grey image. That speck is NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, carrying a sample from asteroid Bennu. All around it are long, horizontal lines, slightly bent, some thick and some thin, which are background stars.

I did some education outreach yesterday at @stmarysbridgend with @comet_chasers and @FLO_UK and the children took this photo of a sunspot. They used remotely a telescope in Spain which has a special Hydrogen Alpha filter to make it safe and to see detail.
