It’s kind of wild that we have companies hyping up what is possibly the moral equivalent of disseminating nuclear weapons technology, and the CEOs of these companies saying “yeah look within 12 months, we expect most people to be irradiated, and within 5 years everyone will be irradiated.” only to be surprised when people aren’t stoked about the future they’re promoting?
AI has the potential for incredible good, but given the current incentives and insane competitiveness of the industry, we’re almost certainly going to just steamroll over any even moderate safeguards or societal safety nets we put up.
Weirdly enough, the thing that is saving us at the moment is that the world physically cannot bring on enough new compute resources fast enough to satiate demand, and we’re already making chips at the nanometer/angstrom scale.
It’s hard to think of a technology that is as much of a net negative as LLMs
Whilst they have some positive uses, the negatives far outweigh them.
