First @bto@BTO_Suffolk Breeding Birds Survey completed. Only 2 Firecrest but good to see 9 Chaffinch, a Cuckoo and families on Mistle Thrush and Pied Wagtail.
A UK-wide Nightjar Survey is underway and many birders are out surveying. There are still some vacant 1-km squares to cover (yellow) so if you can spare two evenings, please check out the BTO website:

Super excited to finally share the first (open access) paper from my PhD! 🦆 We looked at compliance with restrictions on the use of lead for shooting mallards in England, and how this varied across time and space (a thread👇)(1/10)

No Fulmars! We have been monitoring Canna annually since 1969. This is the first time we have had a zero count for Fulmar. Their numbers peaked at 671 occupied sites in 1992.
#InsectWeek
#Nightjar nesting has resumed now that warmer weather has arrived. The female had been present for almost 3 weeks, so possibly failed recently, or decided to delay nesting during the recent weeks of cold & wet conditions. Monitored for @_BTO & @ForestryEngland in #ThetfordForest
A very lost racing pigeon now supplementing the diet of the forest raptors! Not something we see very often with so much natural prey in the form of Woodpigeons!
Another 3 breeding bird survey squares completed in #thetfordforest this morning for @_BTO@ForestryEngland Nice to find 3 more Spot Fly, plus Hobby & Goshawk. Also good numbers of Tree Pipit, Woodlark, Willow Warbler, Stonechat and Chaffinch.
Today, something astonishing has occurred in Cornwall!
The @CBWPS1 has announced today that at Par, Spit beach, 6 Eider (2f 4m) including a female with three ducklings has been photographed.
This constitutes the first breeding record of this species in Cornwall. How amazing is that!

We're well into the first daylight hours Puffin watch of the year and it is confirming what we already suspected, that this is the earliest breeding season on record, running about 12 days earlier than the 2013-2023 mean
The Thetford Forest #nightjar season started well with many back on territory. Only 7 caught but 3 returning from 2023 including this male yeilding our first multi-sensor tag retrieval. Novel flight height data will help reveal the risks posed by wind turbines on migration.

The @_BTO@GWCTScience 2023 #Woodcock Survey results are out and show an ongoing decline of 35% in Britian since 2003, but a surprising 50% decrease in Scotland! Thanks to all the surveyors who helped collect this vital data, which will inform the future conservation actions.
On Monday, June 3rd, a rare event known as the Parade of Planets will occur, where six planets of the solar system will align in a straight line. They will be visible just before sunrise here in the northern hemisphere.
Community note
This image is incorrect. This order of planets will be on the 5th, not 3rd June. In addition on 5th the Moon will also be visible along the line. Misinformation. Highlighted here, but use any "planetarium night sky app" like Stellarium to see the correct order.
