DENR LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION INTO MONTERRAZAS DE CEBU PROJECT
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has launched a comprehensive investigation into the Monterrazas de Cebu Project to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and safeguard surrounding communities.
In an official statement released Friday, the DENR said it had convened a multistakeholder Joint Inspection, Investigation, and Assessment Team composed of technical experts from DENR Region 7, the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB-7), the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB-7), and local environment offices in Cebu City and Barangay Guadalupe.
The team will assess the project's compliance with its Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC), review the effectiveness of its drainage and slope protection systems, and evaluate the stability of slopes, risks of landslides and flooding, and any alterations to natural landforms. It will also look into possible erosion, siltation, or obstructions in nearby waterways.
The DENR has directed the project proponent to submit its Engineering, Geological, and Geohazard Assessment report, which will be verified by the inspection team.
The agency emphasized that any violations of ECC conditions or environmental laws would be met with appropriate corrective actions, including suspension, penalties, or other legal remedies.
"We remain steadfast in our mission to balance development with environmental protection and to ensure that every project operates in full compliance with the law," the DENR said, adding that updates on the joint technical evaluation would be shared with the public.
