This is actually good news, some good optimizations to retain some great speed! There's some caveats here though that may affect future decentralization/expansion, the pqSTARK must require the validators to consume GPU and likely the number of validators has to remain small (randomly sampled?) but for larger scale validator sets like @syscoin Sentry nodes or @ethereum PoS validator set it remains a challenge. In SYS there is a critical piece that stands out here, there a PoW fallback to usage of the aggregate BLS signature for finality so the PQ machine needs real tangible honest PoW or collude with @bitcoin miners. I think this sort of integration highlights modular design that maximizes security and decentralization of PoW and large validator sets, where it is ideal to have slower block times. Perhaps EF having a lot of researchers leave is a symptom of the larger problem of hitting dead end trying to achieve fast high TPS on the base layer against plausible PQ crypto world that just won't let that happen with forseeable math. It may force some chains to re-think their designs or go the way of BNB with smaller validator sets with reduced assumptions if they want fast settlements.
A lot of people assume the hardest part of post-quantum cryptography is the cryptography itself.
In our testing, that wasn’t really the case.
The bigger challenge came from the amount of additional data moving through the network once quantum-resistant signatures were introduced.
A single transaction signature increased from 65 bytes to ~2.4 KB.
That pushed:
• Transaction size from 110 B → ~2.5 KB
• Block size from ~110 KB → ~2 MB
• Native transfer TPS from 4,973 → 2,997
The result was higher cross-region propagation overhead and lower throughput ceilings, even though verification performance itself remained manageable.

heads up we are upgrading @syscoin testnet to latest which includes blake2s DA hash, bitcoin quorum checkpoint service among other features, on which we will launch/migrate the official zkSYS testnet to as we prepare for mainnet release. If you are running testnet you may need to upgrade your node (just build from latest here github.com/syscoin/syscoin)
