A new comment in Nature Portfolio by Drs. Sam Stevens and Deme Karikios discusses need to rigorously evaluate outcomes following the decision to allow tumour-agnostic immunotherapy reimbursement in Australia. This bold policy experiment broadens drug availability, but carries an obligation to learn about patient outcomes, quality use of medicines, equity of access and toxicities so that health systems can serve patients in a way that sensibly balances speed, access and certainty with the best available evidence. doi.org/10.1038/s41571-026-0… #CommonSenseOncology #CancerCare #Nivolumab #Ipilimumab #TumorAgnostic #PrecisionOncology

Scientific innovations in the cancer care space are to be celebrated for the amazing possibilities they can provide. However, these advances can sometimes seem to exist in a separate world from the lives of the very people who are treated by them, their families and communities. This year, ASCO was opened by an extraordinary plenary speech by Dr. Eric Small. In it, he highlighted gaps in the translation of healthcare innovations. Large gaps exist: in global and regional cancer care equity, in compassionate and accessible communications to patients from medical experts, and access to affordable and effective treatments. People with lived cancer experience deserve outcomes that matter. As Dr. Small said: Every cancer. Every patient. Everywhere. While advances should be implemented, health care systems should also prioritize treatments that deliver meaningful benefits to patients. Let's drive human-centred progress in oncology together. #CommonSenseOncology #CancerCare #ASCO2026

CSO at ASCO: Value, Access, and Quality Care: Can We Have It All? Panelists Drs. Ian Tannock, Ajay Aggarwal, Haydeé Verduzco, and Brooke Wilson led an Educational Session at #ASCO2026 about the growing “value crisis” in cancer care, where rising costs, uncertain clinical benefits, and gaps in delivering evidence-based care limit patient access and outcomes. Value in cancer care must be viewed as patient benefits relative to cost—including not just financial expense, but toxicity, time burden, and impact on quality of life. Low-value treatments—those with minimal benefit or inappropriate use—carry significant opportunity costs, diverting resources away from more effective care and worsening inequities. Advancing high-quality oncology care will require reducing low-value interventions, improving quality systems, and aligning drug pricing and treatment decisions with meaningful patient outcomes. CSO at ASCO: Innovation, Evidence, Compassion, and Hope: Delivering Outcomes That Matter. Panelists Drs. Sam Stevens, Michelle Tregear, Rachel Riechelmann, Christopher Jackson, and Chris Booth led an Education Session at #ASCO2026 about the importance of patient-centred outcomes in cancer care. Over the past 50 years, cancer care has seen remarkable advances, but in some circumstances the way we measure progress is misaligned with what patients value most. While there have been important advances in biomedical treatment, systems have not placed enough emphasis on the other core domains of holistic care: compassionate communication, patient empowerment, and psychosocial support. The authors call for a common-sense approach: an emphasis patient-centered outcomes such as survival, quality of life, and functional well-being across clinical trials, policy, and care delivery. Meaningful progress in oncology will require aligning innovation, evidence, and health systems with compassionate, equitable care that truly improves patients’ lives. Cancer care and movement: a new economic analysis of the landmark CHALLENGE clinical trial shows that a supervised exercise program after adjuvant chemotherapy not only improves colon cancer patient survival, it also reduces costs to our health system. Adopting exercise as a standard anti-cancer treatment would mean fewer cancer recurrences and improved survival for patients, and lower treatment costs for our health system. Cancer treatment delivery and outcomes are shaped by the results of clinical trials. That's why it's important to ensure trials remain unbiased and focused on answering clinical questions that matter most. @EORTC (European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer) has published a new paper in @TheLancetOncol today highlighting international agreement on the fundamental nature of academic clinical trials. While becoming less common in today's research landscape, these academic trials intrinsically prevent bias. Common Sense Oncology agrees with the Comment published in The Lancet Oncology and looks forward to the publication of the dedicated Commission. #CommonSenseOncology #CancerCare

🚨 Final call to participate in this research initiative! The survey closes in the coming week.
Calling all oncologists, patients, families, and caregivers. Common Sense Oncology needs 10 minutes of your time to help ensure future patients with cancer receive the information they need to make the treatment decisions that are right for them. CSO and global partners are working to create a short list of questions that patients may find useful when meeting with their oncologist. This anonymous web-based survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete and is approved by the @queensu Queen's University Health Sciences and Affiliated Teaching Hospitals Research Ethics Board (HSREB). Data from this study will be used to generate a tool that can be used by doctors and patients to help people with cancer get the information they need to make the treatment decisions that are best for them.
